Ol' Gloom & Doom Sleepy here, fully bearing the weight and lessons of 2 decades' worth of Aztec Curse.
Yet another HUGE hurdle cleared last night -- with said hurdle rocking back and forth from our barely scraping over the top of it (what with our bad ankles and other assorted bad lower leg parts). But it was cleared nonetheless -- and perhaps yet another layer of confidence as we make our way into the deep end of the pool.
All that said... Time to look at the remaining worst-case scenario and what you think might happen in terms of NCAA Tournament seeding if we lose to BYU at home and lose in the second round of the MWC Tourney to whoever.
If that goes down, I say the worst case scenario is that they'll hand us a 4. What say you, people of much greater Bracketology knowledge than I??

Not that I'm any more expert than you, or the next guy to chime in, but that sounds like a fair worst case scenario. I think our body of work on the whole would merit being one of the top 16 teams.

Sleepy, a classic pessimist from all the nightmares of Aztecland over the last 20 years. So I completely understand...
Buddy, the curse has been lifted! Football went and won a bowl game in 2010.
Hoops will either lose 0 more games = 2 seed; 1 more game = 3 seed; or 2 games and = 4 seed. We will get our 1st ever tourney win in all scenarios and will win a tough 2nd game to get into the Sweet 16! After that, it's all upside and we'll all be along for the ride.

I believe if we win out we will be a #1. We will be 1, 2 or 3 in the country, MTN West Champs, MTN West Tourney Champs and a 33 and 1 record. That is where my head is at. Win the whole damn thing.

I think SDSU goes in at worst...a 2 seed. In my books, a 2 seed is every bit as good as a #1 seed.
Who are you going to lose to from here on out? If the world collapses, you could lose at MOST 2 games. But that is unlikely.
Not to hijack the thread...but, how does the NCAA place teams from the same conference? If the MWC gets in 4 teams, will they all be in separate brackets?

They set up the brackets so the earliest we would face a conference team would be the round of 8. They would place teams in brackets accordingly.

Here is our remaining schedule before the MWC Tourney:
02/16/11 vs. New Mexico* TV Viejas Arena 7:30 p.m. PT 02/19/11 at Air Force* TV USAFA, Colo. 12:00 p.m. MT 02/26/11 vs. Brigham Young* TV Viejas Arena 11:00 a.m. PT 03/01/11 at Wyoming* TV Laramie, Wyo. 8:00 p.m. MT 03/05/11 vs. Colorado State* TV Viejas Arena 7:00 p.m. PT
In my opinion, the most difficult games would be against BYU, Colorado State and New Mexico - In that order. However, all of those games are at our house, so we definitely have the edge. I don't see us losing those games, but it IS possible.
If we look at how we have played to date, especially at home, then I don't see any of these teams being able to knock us off.

Don't underestimate the difficulty of our game at airforce.

It's very possible to play a horrible road/neutral game, have an injury and foul trouble and lose 3 more games dropping us to a worst case scenario 4 seed. I could also see us have a huge emotional letdown at wyo after beating BYU .. but because we lost last year at Wyo, I can't see that happening again. But I would not be shocked if we lost any combination of these games ...
vs NM vs BYU vs CSU
conference tourney ...
BYU, UNLV, CSU or NM It will be interesting to see if we jump Ohio St in this weeks polls. If we do, we might have a shot at a #1 .. if we don't #2 is probably the best we can do having never won a NCAA game. Of course unless we kick the living crap out of BYU twice.

That brings up an interesting point. Why should our previous record in the NCAA Div I tournaments have anything whatsoever to do with our seeding this year? Obviously, the answer is that it should make no difference. This is now, not 2010, 2009, or whatever previous year the Aztecs were in the Dance. Of course, since the seeding may be decided by people who have an agenda to take care of, one never knows. AzWm

If we win out we'll be a # 1 seed. Pittsburgh and Duke are both likely to lose one more game and probably Ohio State at Purdue next Sunday. But Ohio State probably stays ranked ahead of us even if they lose that game. But we would have the best record in the country except for Kansas which also might lose. If we're the only one-loss team in the country, there is no way we're not a # 1 seed.
