Mike Lopez is in his last year as the Aztec Warrior. After three years, a new warrior who is a current student will be chosen to take over the tradition starting with tryouts tomorrow (2/10). They will be big shoes to fill. Check out more on Mike: bit.ly/htg9xQ

Mike has really grown into the role and done a fantastic job (as have Miguel and Carlos before). Each representative had their own flair and as they became more comfortable, their individual character evolved and added to the fine tradition. I look forward to see who the next warrior(s) is and how they add to the great tradition of Monty Montezuma.

Mike will be sorely, sorely missed. What the....They can still come to the game just like Chet - cant they? Even though Chet was a yell leader!

Did you see the AW interact with a couple of little kids on that video? I thought we had to have a fricken CAT to do that?
What a joke! The Aztec Warrior (or better yet MONTY MONTEZUMA) is fine for the kids.
GET RID OF ZUMA!!! Not needed!

I was completely skeptical of this young man when he took over as Monty (yes, Monty), being that Carlos was SUCH a presence. But this kid is GOOD! His body has completely changed, and his persona is now amazing. Going to be sad to see him go, he's done such a great job; big shoes to fill!
As for Zuma, I was shocked by him, but he's fine. Doesn't bother me one bit, unless their intent (which I highly doubt it is) is to have him replace the Warrior.

I think Mr. Lopez has done a great job in the role of the Aztec Warrior.
I hope this thread can serve as a de-facto congratulations/thanks thread instead of the usual mascot debate tripe.
Come on! Let's try it. GOOD JOB MIKE!

Miguel took a few games to grow into the role as well, but he turned out pretty damn well (Miguel is the one featured in the "Aztec For Life" commercial). Mike is the second guy since Carlos hung up his headdress. Thanks for doing the Aztecs proud, Mike!

We were just watching the commercial last night going "damn, he really hit the gym". Well, regardless, good job to Mike as well!

Mike Lopez has done a fantastic job. Kudos to you Mike.
On a different note, before there was the vuvuzelas, there was the blowing sea shell. Let's see SDSU ban this one from the student section.

I hope he gets officially recognized at the CSU game as he retires. I have grown to appreciate him. Carlos set the standard for me but Mike measures up too.

Mike Lopez is in his last year as the Aztec Warrior. After three years, the alumni association will be choosing a current student to take over the tradition starting with tryouts tomorrow (2/10). They will be big shoes to fill. Check out more on Mike: bit.ly/htg9xQCORRECTION: It is NOT the Alumni Association who will be making the choice for the new Aztec Warrior. While the mascot currently resides within the Alumni Association and not Athletics (for various reasons I can explain at another time), the Aztec Warrior Committee members as well as Jim Herrick Alumni and Schnall (Athletics) will all have input and make the final decision. As for Mike- He has grown into the role. It's truly a simple job and a tough job all at once. The toughest part I suspect is the willingness to run around in a skirt and very little else, in front of thousands of people. I've noticed that when the mascot starts, he generally wants to watch the game which is natural rather than doing what the job entails, firing up the fans. Mike has done a great job and has improved over the time he's had this role. Hopefully the all future Aztec Warriors will do the same and grab the job with enthusiasm and pride that it takes to do a good job. Nice vid on Mike by the way.
