i thought the Aztecs played their hearts out last night, and i think that Fisher and staff had a good game plan going in, even leading at the half.
unfortunately several factors became apparent during the game... the Aztec depth was not being used. BYU came in with the idea that they would wear down the Aztecs who choose to play Man-Man the entire game. Aztecs may have been better off if they had some sort of zone defense in their arsenal for times such as these when fatigue can make or break the game. Much of what BYU seemed to be doing was fully intended to tire out the Aztecs...lots of movement, up tempo..the Aztecs were clearly tired and looked tanked with 12 mins left in the game. Tiring out on Defense, the Aztecs could not finish strong on the offensive side. Fisher choose to not bring in players that perhaps could have helped bring some energy and defense....specifically Carwell and JFranklin. JFranklin is a player i would have liked to see on Jimmer.

BYU up to this game has a total team built to "bust a zone". Jimmer, Jackson, and Hartsock can flick those three points in like nobody's business.
You realize that your man to man defense shut down Emery Jackson to zero points until about 5 minutes left in the game. Hartsock also was effectively shut down.
I think Fisher made a conscientious effor to shut everyone else down, and didn't think that Jimmer could hurt you as badly as he did. Almost worked....the game was still in question with about 3 minutes left in the game.

My bad. I see what you're saying. However, I was getting so worried that first half...seemed to be working.

My bad. I see what you're saying. However, I was getting so worried that first half...seemed to be working. I wonder why Carlwell, Shelton, Cheriet, either Franklin didn't see more minutes to rest the starters? Perhaps the lack of any foul problems for the who's changed the substitutions due to matchups. Fisher & a few guys on here the only ones can explain that.

During the game, I thought it odd that Fisher didn't play his bench more in the first half. He seemed to break his pattern. I understand that BYU is a different animal but in the other MWC games at altitude, he subbed freely in the first half especially the frontline. Carlwell only got 4 minutes and Shelton 6, then you have Thomas (36), Leonard (36), White (34)... etc. Those minutes are definitely not the norm.
Playing that many minutes in a big game at altitude, throw in the fact that BYU wasn't called for a foul until the 10 minute mark in the second half and I think the Aztecs were just called for a few. No breaks.
They ran out of gas... plain and simple.
