...USC gets the death penalty? That would take out one major recruiter from our turf. Yeah, ucla would still be around, but the death penalty would kill SC's ability to recruit...What say you wise ones...

No program has gotten the death penalty in a quarter century - and that program is only now starting to turn it around. They aren't going to do that to a marquee program.

and even if they did, USC might not be a member of the NCAA for long enough to matter. Super Conferences will create their own governing body and tell the NCAA to kiss off.
When they refer to a major reallignment, they mean major!

They got hit pretty good if the early reports are true. 20 Schollys over 3 seasons and a two year postseason ban really made Kiffins day i'm sure lol

It's quite true that no program, especially a big time one, is likely to get the death penalty. As B5Erik says, the only one so far to get it, SMU, has spent over 20 years trying to dig their way out of the hole they landed in. (Though I suspect that it should not have taken that long to at least achieve respectability.)
If I were in charge of the penalty phase, I would include a limit on home games as well as a reduction in scholarships. USC would really feel the pain if they were told they could only have 4 home games a year for a couple of seasons.
Oh, yes, one more thing. In the case of USC, have not the transgressions of the Trojan basketball program been a factor? Or is this all related to Trojan football. AzWm

Man, do you guys think this would have impacted Dillon Baxter's decision enough for him to come here instead of becoming a condom.

Reduction is scholarships? Looks like UCLA or SDSU maybe next in line to pick up the leftover players who are stuck without a program to play for, especially if they want to stay in SoCal.

Kiffen now has an excuse if he doesn't win. A coach with a great track record like Kiffen can't succeed under such oppressive conditions. In reality, 20 scholarships over 3 years = 7 per year. Hurts, yes. But the benefit of the publicity and money from the Reggie Bush years waaay outweighs the loss of scholarships. As for the two year bowl ban, it only impacts 2011 recruits who want to play as true freshman, i.e., I don't see it hurting at all. The bowl ban only hurts USC in the pocketbook. Yet I don't see Matt Barkley leading USC to two BCS games, so I suspect it will only cost USC anywhere between $2 to $8 million in lost bowl revenue. Once again, the benefit of the Bush years outweighs the penalty. Bottom line, USC got the better end of the Reggie Bush years. EDIT: And no, don't look for those twenty lost recruits to end up at SDSU.

The ban should have also banned their team from being on TV for any regular season games too.

This will not help or hurt SDSU.
USC will eventually rise above this, and be back in the NC game within the next four years.

Simply out of curiosity and by way of measuring the seriousness with which the NCAA takes various kinds of rule infractions, does anyone remember the number of scholarships SDSU lost as a result of the towel throwing incident under Craft? And how many years it covered? Just like to see the range--20 scholarships over 3 years for having an agent, getting house for your parents, etc vs towel throwing. The Fred Noonan School of Navigation.
