This is an odd hiring all around. I'm surprised Maryland would replace Friedgen with a guy who has been good, but unspectacular at UCONN. Edsall has UCONN at about the same level as the Fridge had Maryland, which wasn't good enough.
I'm also surprised Edsall would leave UCONN, where they are happy to have a 8-5 or 9-4 team, for Maryland, where they just fired the ACC coach of the year.

I could see if they really wanted Mike Leach, and knew they'd get him. Randy Edsall? Good coach, but no more so than Friedgen. If Maryland wanted Friedgen out so bad, they should have fired him after 2009's awful season. To do it after he takes them to a good bowl game and wins conf. coach of the year.....? Stupid.

Agree my older brother is a Maryland grad and he is scratching his head. My nephew played for Maryland about 20 years ago.

Maryland's lateral move Congratulations, Maryland. You win the award for strangest coaching search of the season. Having forced out reigning ACC coach of the year Ralph Friedgen in part because the Terps were having trouble filling seats, the school passed on perceived front-runner Mike Leach at the 11th hour Sunday in favor of Connecticut's Randy Edsall.
Edsall is without a doubt a great coach, and the eccentric Leach isn't for everyone. But did Maryland even make an upgrade here? Did Edsall? A source with knowledge of the search told the Washington Post that the school got cold feet about Leach. "They wanted to make the conservative, safe, non-confrontational hire," the source said. "That's the bottom line."
Hmm. Conservative, safe and non-confrontational. Sounds a lot like ... Ralph Friedgen.Read more: sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/stewart_mandel/01/02/jim-harbaugh-coaching-carousel/index.html#ixzz19x3kUtn8
