There is, technically, still a state or war between North and South Korea. Over the years the fragile armistice between the two nations has been threatened by a series of hostile incidents, all originating in the North.
With the sinking of a South Korean warship, and the loss of 46 lives, tensions between north and south are at a high level. Will this lead to war? Perhaps. David E. Sanger, writing in the New York Times Week in Review explains five ways in which full scale fighting might begin.
(Sanger mentions that the Obama administration has decided to not repeat the old pattern of appeasing the North in hopes of getting them to behave better. I think that is a wise decision, though how this all will turns out remains to be seen.)
