There is, technically, still a state or war between North and South Korea. Over the years the fragile armistice between the two nations has been threatened by a series of hostile incidents, all originating in the North. With the sinking of a South Korean warship, and the loss of 46 lives, tensions between north and south are at a high level. Will this lead to war? Perhaps. David E. Sanger, writing in the New York Times Week in Review explains five ways in which full scale fighting might begin. (Sanger mentions that the Obama administration has decided to not repeat the old pattern of appeasing the North in hopes of getting them to behave better. I think that is a wise decision, though how this all will turns out remains to be seen.) www.nytimes.com/2010/05/30/weekinreview/30sanger.html?ref=weekinreviewAzWm

I applaud Obama for that move if he will follow through. It seems like it would help bring things to a head rather than just kicking the can down the road. More risky in the short term but with a better chance of a favorable outcome.

I've got to say I really hope it doesn't come down to war over there. I spent two years there patrolling the DMZ in the mid 80's. It is not the place to fight. It was one of the hottest places I've been during the summer months and the absolute coldest place I've ever been in the winter months.
The terrain is some of the toughest I've ever been around as well. I really hope for a diplomatic solution to this conflict for our kids sakes.

The problems of the Koreas will not be solved until the North has a rational government instead of a bunch of psycho clowns.
