After going to the game live last year it took me a long time to re-live the game by watching my DVR of the NCAA championship game for the first time last night. I thought it might make me feel worse about our chances tomorrow. However, I feel better about our chances. Of course we have to play well and we need a sub par game from them but I think it could happen.
After hitting our first 2 threes last year and making 4 of our first 5 shots we primarily went cold for the first half. Amazingly after shooting 29% to their 50% we were only down 36-24. Our bigs last year of Arop and Mensa gave us little offensively although we'll feel their loss on defense. Keshad had a solid game but missed some very makeable shots and front ends of one and ones that would have helped.
We made our comeback from 15 down mainly with LeDee, Butler, Trammell, and Parrish playing with Arop. I think Saunders is close to Arop defensively albeit not as good of a rebounder at this point and a more potent scorer. This gives me hope we can hang because Ledee really came on in the 2nd half and although Clingan is better too I think he will make more down low and hopefully he keeps his hot hand from outside. Butler and Trammell were super solid in the game both offensively and defensively.
My biggest concern is that the refs call it even which will be hard since this is virtually a home game for them. If they do we have a real chance. Danny Hurley whined at the refs all night and they really listened last year in the 2nd half. Last year after 7 minutes were gone in the 2nd half we already had 7 fouls. Then with 8 minutes gone we had 9 so they got 2 shots the rest of the way. This proved to be a huge factor in the game as we missed front ends of one and ones and they were getting 2 shots with 11 minutes left in the game.
In my mind last year when we cut it to 5 with 5 minutes left I thought we had a real chance until Hawkins hit the three right away. However, the fouls really killed us because they made a lot of free throws in the last 5 minutes.
Of course they bring back Newton, Clingan and Karagan(sp?) so it won't be easy and they have some new pieces that are good too. I think if Ledee and Butler can stay out of foul trouble and Ledee stays hot we have a real chance if we can just hit 38% of our threes. I'd love to see them in a one possession game in the last 2 minutes. They haven't been tested in a long time and have never been tested in the last 2 tournaments spanning 8 games.
Let's do this! Go Aztecs!

Beside that, I'm hoping we can keep it close!

It's a good point that this is basically a home game for yoUConn. In the games that I've seen thus far the MM refs have called good games. However, is this the first "home" game for a MM team to date? We know Hurley will try to bait the refs (like his predecessors did) especially with the home crowd behind him, so Dutch might have to counteract him by smashing a clipboard or two within earshot of the refs. It's unfortunate how drama has to play a role. SMH

Dutcher needs to get in the refs ears early and keep pace with that whiner Hurley. AZTECS would benefit from a heckler near Hurley to distract him, he gets pretty hot. SDSU might as well try the perimiter game and see if they can hit their 3's. Just a few ideas.

Hurley is on the refs from the opening tip and is a real douchebag.
I admit he is successful however, despite being an annoying ass.

The sdsu vs UConn spread is the largest of all the sweet 16 games at 11.5.
If we win, it will be a massive upset.
I love our Aztecs but UConn is at another level.
I will be routing for our Aztecs like mad.

Even in the lower bowl behind the Aztec bench I had to watch the giant screens up above for some of the game. I still find it shocking that so many people attend. A small basketball court in a giant football stadium is tough for sure. It was the first time I ever attended a Final Four and I learned a great deal. Case in point, way too much downtime in between games. I had to watch on the TV once I returned as well. For some reason, I always watch those games with a slimmer of hope the result will change. Never lose hope!

If we'd "lost" the UCONN game instead of getting "beat" by a much better team it would have been hard to watch. I was thrilled just be part of the Final Four weekend. And to make the Championship game was surreal. I wouldn't even have put that on my bucket list as it was so unlikely.

Never lose hope! I almost tried to get Final Four tickets when it was played in the Sports Arena here in San Diego. After they started playing the game in football stadiums I said I'd never go to one because of the horrible sight lines. With the elevated court even the close seats wouldn't give a good view.
Even when we made the Elite Eight I assured my wife we wouldn't be going to the Final Four if the Aztec won. Then Trammell hit that last free throw to win the game. I turned to my wife to ask here is she thought we should make the trip, but she beat me to it as said we should. I frantically jumped on the computer to sign up for the trip.
We didn't go to see the game as much as be there at the event. Way too expensive, but worth every penny. I doubt I'll ever make it back to a Final Four even if the Aztecs are in it. But, no promises.
