For those who are boycotting ESPN and didn't see it, the program just showed me again what a POS that guy is. Like most of the rest of his former teammates, he just laughed about the cheating. But he was the most despicable.
One of the guilty boosters said most of the players who were paid to play were poor kids from the ghetto. Well, when they showed film of James in HS, it sure didn't look like he was playing at a ghetto school. And the one kid from Pennsylvania who took money and then told the NCAA about it was paid $25K to sign a LOI. Although the program didn't say he got anything else, all the players were receiving money each month, too. Seemed to be $300-$500, worth probably three times that today. That in addition to their free room and board. And to use Hacksaw's term, the Pennsylvania kid was "just a guy." James, OTOH, was an all-state tailback so you have to think he was paid considerably more than the Pennsylvania kid.
Criminals generally have to pay restitution to their victims. Since there were no victims here, there wouldn't be any restitution to pay. However, criminals often then pay a fine to the state. Since he's earned a pretty penny as a broadcaster, IMO James should have been compelled to pay the NCAA a fine equivalent to whatever he was paid. They say it's unfair to penalize players down the line who didn't cheat. Well, why the NCAA doesn't penalize guys like James who did is beyond me. And what else does it say about the system when they then go on to very lucrative careers as employees of companies that NCAA members contract with and then laugh about the fact they cheated?

Well, it is pretty clear you hate Craig James. But he is not guilty of anything. He just stooped over and picked up some free money. SMU, it's boosters, The SMU President, were the guilty ones.
As Reggie Bush and his family have demonstrated, times don't change.
James is a good citizen, he committed no crimes.

If the poor loser Craiggy James refused the money and blown the whistle, that would have demonstrated character. I guess he had no character and still has none, ta-boot.
The boycott is still on, strong since the days they corso'd Faulk as the winner.

That's technically true since what he did didn't violate a state statute. However, if you're saying he didn't violated NCAA RULES that's complete bull. As the mother of the kid from Pennsylvania admitted, her now-deceased son and their family did exactly that. And unlike James, she said it was a mistake and an embarrassment to the family and if they had it to do all over again they never would have accepted the money that was offered.

I wouldn't even fault him if he hadn't blown the whistle but just refused the money and kept quiet about it. However, particularly in light of all the character assassination he did to Mike Leach a year ago, to take it and laugh about it 30 years later rather than admitting its impropriety is the height of hypocrisy.

That was an interesting program. I saw it last night and actually missed most of the first half of the Aztec game because of it. But you know what... supposedly all of the big programs were doing that back then and I wouldn't doubt it.

Very interesting show. I don't believe this has changed a bit, just folks are more careful not to implode on their faces.

I hate Craig James as a broadcaster, and wasn't old enough to care about him as a player, but according to the documentary he wasn't paid.
There were a lot of items in the documentary that seem to support the fact that he wasn't paid:
1) The fact that the coach admitted that Dickerson was paid, but denied that James was paid makes it believable.
2) His girlfriend was already a student at SMU, they had already decided that they were going to go to school together, and she wouldn't transfer to Alabama, where he wanted to play.
3) They have news footage of James and the coach from signing day, which shows James saying he's having second thoughts about signing because he's worried they'll be put on probation as a result of the Dickerson scandal (him driving around in a new Trans Am).
The Coach is shown on the news footage calling the NCAA headquarters from Craig James house to confirm to him and his mom that SMU didn't do anything wrong, and the Trans Am was paid for by Dickerson's Grandmother. If James had been paid himself, it wouldn't make much sense to have the coach call the NCAA office from his house to verify that they didn't buy the Trans Am for Dickerson.
There are a couple other inaccuracies in the initial post:
1) The kid from Pennsylvania was paid $5k and his family was given an apartment rent free. He was a top recruit, but he'd had knee surgery and couldn't play.
2) The kid that was given $25k and $300-$400/month was an all state linebacker from Texas who was offered by UT and A&M.
