Seems like the Padres Brass played Smart Ball today. Whether they won the day remains to be seen, but they filled some holes, gave Melvin some better options, and maybe the on-field team will do the same with the way they play today. They must win today's game. A clearer message could not have been sent to them.

He is not an "innings eater". Never has been. He's 19th in the league when it comes to innings pitched, and his ceiling for innings is significantly higher than Lugo's (or Wacha's at this point). He's a solid add, and he WILL help eat innings, especially during the upcoming stretch without a day off. Sure he will. 5 innings at a time.

Padres did him few favors. I agree that a different organization may be able to work out the kinks in his delivery and help set him straight. He really got jerked around by the organization - to the point that he just seemed like he had little self-confidence left. Hope he does real well in KC. Weathers will do well in Miami. Marlins excel at pitch design concepts. Yeah Weathers needs another good pitch. He kept getting killed the third time through the lineup. I think that he would have done better if we used him as an opener, but hopefully he can develop another pitch in Miami.

Padres trade for Garrett Cooper from the Marlins for Ryan Weathers. Cooper had been a target for a while. First base/DH with some outfield. Padres also land Scott Barlow, reliever from the Royals. Barlow's a good get. Like that acquisition a lot, let Niebla work his magic and help Barlow work out the kinks. Hopefully he can revert back into a high leverage guy for us. Bottom line is we gotta win close games. 6-18 in one run games and 0-9 in extra innings isn't going to cut it. Our hitters nedd to play with more confidence in extras. We have some of the best hitters I'm the league. Go out there and play up to your salary, don't be intimidated by the moment. Hopefully the DH platoon can give us a boost as well.

Sean Reynolds is an underrated pickup as well. Young reliever with full service time, corner outfielder type converted to a reliever in 2021. 3.5 ERA in AAA this year. This is exactly the type of organizational pitching depth that we need.
