Padres lose the first game of the season, 7-2 to the Rockies.
Snell was reasonably sharp, he struck out 9 over 4.1 innings and deserved to win.
The bullpen was not sharp, coming down with an early season of gopherballitis. None of the relievers were truly effective and Tapia’s command was crapola.
With the exception of Bogaerts, too many hitters seemed mesmerized by breaking balls which dropped in for a ton of called 3rd strikes.
Wasn’t particularly impressed with the corner outfield defense, Grisham may need to go Kelly Leeke in the outfield. David Dahl looked like a rudderless ship on a few of those fly balls.
I have always hated using 3-5 relievers in a game. Usually one or two of them come in not having their best command or stuff and they get blasted off the mound giving up 4 runs. It just doesn’t seem like winning baseball to me.
It’s a long season.

You're right about the corner fielders and their defense … David Dahl provided fans with a particularly poor introduction going 0-4 with those fielding foibles.
Soto didn't really look light years better in left. Two balls he probably could've handled with a little better hustle - one went out for a home run. Bouncing on top of the wall? I think Profar would've corralled that one. Same with the fly ball that bounced in front of him.
However, in the plus column for Juanito, his throw to Boegarts and the subsequent relay home was textbook, and it resulted in an out at the plate, so there's plenty to work with. Soto's still developing as an outfielder, he was not known for his defense in D.C. He probably needs to take the Tony Gwynn road to Golden Glovedom …
Junior will likely provide the same heart stopping antics in right field until he gets a few seasons in the outfield. It's a huge area. Judgmental errors will be made. Hopefully, they won't often be the kind that lose baseball games.

Was sitting directly on line with Soto last night, zero chance he gets to the ball off the wall, he tried to play the carom, it bounced over. Second ball he probably should have caught, but I don't want to see diving attempts or anything silly in game one, coming off that oblique strain. The Rockies got some very fortunate bounces last night, but those things tend to even out.

Luckily, neither play actually influenced the outcome last night.

Buddy Black had to be very pleased with his pitching staff's performances last night. Statistics for the Rockies pitchers strongly suggest it ain't gonna be that way all season long, but last night, they controlled the game. Maybe Dinelson has turned a corner, too. He'll be a good middle inning guy for them if he can just keep his elbow from disintegrating. They're going to need several.

The grass looked great though - which means it probably was pretty tough to get consistent traction depending on their footwear. The "look' reminded me of how the SB turf looked in Las Vegas - beautiful, but fragile. The turf at Petco will probably take some "seasoning" to be in its best playing condition. The rain last night didn't help either, and at that time, that cloud was the only raincell in the county. The satellite made it look like the cloud specifically chose Petco Park as its target. The turf looked great on TV, though.

But I would say the grass was probably a bit treacherous, as balls hit in the gap really scooted through quickly.
