Bogaerts had been absolutely fantastic so far this year.

Two in a row. That's a win streak.
BP came through big time tonight. Starter, not so much.

Right back to weakville with the bats, so they give the ball to Garcia, who predictably craps the mound… 5 ER in 1/3 inning. Another opportunity to get off the pot tomorrow. Maybe.

Maybe. 4 of their 12 losses are by shutout. Throw in a few games where they only scored 1 or 2 runs in their other losses, and it stinks.

I was thinking about just how many baseballs someone like Nelson Cruz has probably hit in his lifetime, and it must really be a BIG number. Like in the tens of thousands. Likely even more - if they hit a ball 20 times a day for 300 days a year, then someone like Cruz is likely somewhere near 200,000 by his age. Obviously, guys like Manny have fewer years, and the kids like Tatis and Soto have fewer. But with all of those balls being hit, the muscle memory involved, the reflex and reaction that's part of what they do, these guys should not be having trouble seeing a baseball well enough to hit it. But it sure seems that way for some of them right now.
As far as the BP goes, I'm not sure what to think at this point. They'll come around, but from being dominant last night to the next night being worthless … they'll claim Garcia (like Crismatt) is hurt so they can put them on the shelf for two weeks and test some more arms. The AAA+ relief staff remains the Padres weak link. Too bad they didn't work harder on that in the off-season.

Kim comes up big!!! Based loaded 2 outs, and he salvages a potential based loaded and nobody out, goose egg. Odor smokes on up the middle, but the infield played him there. Thank goodness we got two runs out of it.

The AAA+ relief staff remains the Padres weak link. Too bad they didn't work harder on that in the off-season. Definitely not the case. Wilson has been one of the best relievers in baseball, Hader has been lights out and some under the radar guys have largely been fine. The problem is twofold: Crismatt has lost his command and velocity atter being the most critical piece to the bullpen last year and Robert Suarez hasn't thrown a pitch yet. Carrying seven relievers due to the six-man rotation stretches what little depth there actually is with 24 games in 25 days. There's just not enough availability right now. They'll be much better when the schedule lightens up with five off days in May. The offense remains the biggest issue by far at this point, but signs of life are emerging.

The first three weeks was a grind for them, and it didn't do anything for their bullpen, either. With four days off between now and May 8, they have an opportunity to rest up and work on a few things during practice.

Snell 27 pitches and 2 walks in the 1st inning. He's gotta be the most frustrating Padres' pitcher in recent memory.

They're all hiding behind hoods because of the cold tonight. Maybe they should try paper bags tomorrow night. Meanwhile, Hosmer is still predictably poor as long as he's batting. And Cubbies have him DH'ing

Too many non-productive and wasted pitches - again. Not the Cy Young Winner he was five years ago. Will likely take another L tonight, though the "hitters" should certainly share the loss - unless they manage to pull this one out. At least the BP hasn't imploded tonight, and they're still very much in the game right now. Nevermind.

.199 with runners in scoring position, only the Tigers are worse.
68 wRC+.
Bottom ten in line drive percentage with runners on.
26% strikeout rate.
At some point, it's got to be fixed or you're going to kill your pitching.

Aside from Bogaerts, who on this team is playing anywhere close to their potential? Pitchers or hitters.

Pretty sure they - and everybody else in the baseball world - thought they had added enough bats to fix it for the next decade…

Aside from Bogaerts, who on this team is playing anywhere close to their potential? Pitchers or hitters. Hader, Wilson (outside of one outing)...Offensively, I don't think they are that far away. A lot of guys underperforming their expected numbers. Just takes one guy to get going.

Got some offense right when they needed it tonight, and that made a huge difference.
Playing baseball at 40°F is no fun for anyone - with the wind blowing, it's no wonder they all needed hoodies. Even with them, they still had frozen face…
