He has not produced, so far, in the reliever role.

What's his role as a reliever? Does he even have one? With only a fastball and a slider - even if it's a nasty one - he seems better suited to closing than to middle relief. Maybe his arm still isn't feeling like it should … Should'a probably had a 2nd TJ - he's likely going to have to do it eventually. It's either that or keep bouncing back and forth to the IL. Maybe airing it out an inning at a time will keep him from further damages. Who knows. I don't think the Padres do, that's for sure, since they're the ones who helped him "develop" this problem in the first place.
Now, go get Juan Soto? (Gotta aim high… LOL)

Whatever the solution for Lamet is, it's probably going to take some time to come to fruition

It may already be at an end … where's he been lately?

It may already be at an end … where's he been lately? I'm talking a year and a half ago, when concerns surfaced. Everyone wanted him to have the surgery at the time. He pitched just a few days ago, but has been used sparingly.

I thought Lamet was going to be a frontline starter for years to come, at one point.
I suppose he still could be that, but he’s 30 this year and has had one great (although shortened) season with a bunch of “meh” 4.500 to 5 ERA seasons.
He also walks too many guys.
However, SD doesn’t need too much more as far as prospects go so I’d only move him in a deal for a bullpen asset or bat. Obviously, it would take more than just Dinelson to bring back either.

I never really subscribed to the theory. He's always been a one pitch pitcher - The fastball has never been a good pitch throughout his entire career. The slider was so good and he could manipulate it so well, it really masked the deficiencies well. On the farm front, I think the opposite. They definitely could use an infusion of prospects. Beyond the top four, it gets murky.

Certainly, some starters have had frontline success with a modest repertoire. Lance Lynn comes to mind. There’s a guy who throws fastball what, 90% of the time? Though to be fair, I believe he throws up to four different types. Cutter, sinker, 4, split. If MLB The Show is at all accurate (LOL, I love the game) I believe Lamet only throws 2 seam, 4 seam with the slider? I should clarify my thoughts on prospects. Lamet isn’t fetching anything prospect wise but a fringe player. We know that. I’d rather try and package him for a good bullpen arm or a depth bat, along with another player or prospects. SD is still in pretty good shape with their top ten.

Tremendous raw power, but a ton of swing and miss. The farm's going to look better when Salas comes in, Susana gives them a boost and a couple other guys take steps forward.

At the 1/8th mark, Padres bullpen could use a wake-up call - and maybe an upgrade as well … As much as I root for a player like Lamet, he is simply taking up valuable BP roster space right now. Unless the Padres know something about his progress that they're not advertising - wouldn't be the first time, even though it seemed like the days of obfuscation were behind them with a change in upper mgmt.
Today's addition of Petit to the minors may be the upgrade - maybe losing Lamet is the wake-up call. Who knows?

Here's a question, and I realize that it is going to sound dumb. Why is it that some pitchers (such as Darvish) work on and have tons of different pitches in their arsenal, and some only have a couple of pitches? Is it lack of command, or lack of feel, that leads some pitchers to only have 2 pitches?

A lot depends on a pitcher's arsenal because you typically want pitches that tunnel well off each other. So guys will throw x pitch to set another pitch up well. Paddack was a good example of a fastball guy that used the fastball to set up the changeup.

His secondary pitches need to tunnel off of the fastball so that the hitter can't recognize either pitch as easily. New pitches need to be able to tunnel off the primary pitch and be complimentary in the difference in location when the ball gets to the batter

So much of analytics now is about pitch design and pitch shaping. That's a major reason why some of the more progressive organizations (Seattle, Milwaukee, LA, San Francisco) have had good success developing arms.

Trade for another outfielder and return Profar to a utility role. Myers out shows how thin the Padres are…..the Azocar Beatty Thompson trifecta seems kind of underwhelming.

What a mess. Hits batter, can't get the ball over. Loses (another) game in relief.
Future is not looking bright for this one.

Yeah, I wonder what's going on. He just doesn't seem to have any kind of control right now. It's always a combination of factors, but coming in somewhat cold in a high stress situation having been off for a week … As soon as I saw him warming up as Hill struggles, I thought that the situation sure didn't seem like the best set up for success. But how many really are. He's just got to start making better pitches. Consistently. The fuse is getting shorter.
