A rare one, too. Padres send minor league infielder River Ryan for Dodger 1B/OF Matt Beaty. Padres and Dodgers haven't made a deal in over half a decade prior to today.

His stats look very similar to Hosmer's (for offense and defense), but obviously Beaty is extremely affordable. Probably an important deal for outfield depth, even if it's a rather unexciting move.

Their projections for 2022 are identical, unfortunately.

This is what I want. It would cost SD big tho.
——“ According to USA TODAY’s Bob Nightengale, the San Diego Padres have had discussions with the Pittsburgh Pirates about acquiring budding star outfielder Bryan Reynolds. Adding the 27-year-old Reynolds would be a coup for a San Diego team that is aiming to be a World Series contender in 2022.
After finishing fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2019, Reynolds made his first All-Star Game in 2021, slashing .302/.390/.522 with 24 home runs, 90 RBI and 93 runs scored.
Per Nightengale, Padres right-handed starter Chris Paddack, 26, and left-handed starter Ryan Weathers, 22, have been mentioned as possible return pieces for Pittsburgh.”

Although, maybe the best deal, turns out to be a no deal in this situation. If it's gonna get done, it may come down to giving up Abrams, or Gore. If I had to give up one of them, I would have to go with Abrams. Pitching trumps infielder/outfielder, and Gore's upside is tremendous and it looks like he's coming around. Abram's is excellent as well, but we'll have Reynold's. I'd hate to give up either.

Hopefully, they can figure out another way to get it done. Or, like I said, sometimes your best deal, is a no deal. Only time will tell with these two youngsters.

Not to mention with Tatis' history, we need the depth at SS.

“ The Padres have been attempting to trade first baseman Eric Hosmer for more than a year. The Mets are in active conversations with multiple clubs. In recent weeks, a possible match between the teams has emerged.
One concept that has been discussed would involve sending Hosmer and right-hander Chris Paddack to New York in exchange for left fielder-first baseman Dominic Smith, sources tell The Athletic. For the Padres, such a deal would allow them to move Hosmer’s contract while addressing their need in left field. For the Mets, acquiring Paddack could help soften the blow to their rotation after an MRI revealed a stress reaction in Jacob deGrom’s right scapula. But as of late Friday, no agreement had been reached, even as both teams continued to explore a variety of trade possibilities.”

Everything else is pretty much a formality.
