It looks like the Padres will have a fairly solid rotation going into this season. (weather they can stay healthy is another matter) Musgrove, Darvish, Snell, Clevenger are an impressive first four starters, what about the 5th spot? Paddack, Lamet or Knehr seem likely candidates, but with Morejon and Baez still overcoming injures could there at last be a window for Mackenzie Gore? Given the alarming amount of arm troubles last year, how does new manager Bob Melvin keep his rotation on the mound? The last manager’s strategy of 90 pitches or 5 innings then to the bullpen was a disaster, with the bullpen completely shot by July and starting rotation obliterated by injuries anyway, in spite of all the soft walk precautions. Blake Snell being taken out of games twice in the 6/7th inning based on a “pitch count” while he was pitching a perfecto and a no no was absurd. He got injured 2 starts later even with the “safety measures” in place. With a looming work stoppage, I have to wonder if staffs will be rushed into action sooner than the usual timetable or if a veteran staff will have an edge in terms of durability.

There were not an "alarming amount" of arm troubles last year. Normal attrition after the truncated season with innings being extended to double or triple their previous finishes, combined with guys who have substantial injury histories. The fifth starter spot should belong to Nick Martinez as of now, but Gore will have every chance to win a spot if Niebla can get his mechanics back on track. The bullpen was also "not shot by July" - The upper level of depth was mostly hurt, unfortunately and they relied on a half dozen guys to make 65+ appearances. The 'pen posted a 3.93 FIP in August, which ranked 13th in baseball for the month. Regarding the lockout, guys are preparing for a full season and are on normal throwing progressions. Spring training will likely be condensed, but most guys are coming off relatively full workloads, so the increases should largely be minimal, reducing the strain. The upper level depth should also get a boost with some guys coming back and some minor league signings still to be made.

Fair enough, to your point most of the starters in the rotation made 22+ starts so sure, that’s not bad. I guess I remember Lamet (who was looking like Tom Seaver for a moment in 2020) generally not being available along with a few of the other guys having issues. Now, the bullpen……they were very effective right up until the All Star break, then BOOM…..no lead was safe for the Padres and this was a huge factor in the second half collapse.
Regardless, with the return of Clevinger, the rotation may be the best in franchise history. It would be great if Darvish or Snell could step up and have a Cy Young worthy year.

Darvish was undone by really, really fluky home run prevention in the second half. His xWOBA was .284 in the second half, which is elite. His back was a genuine issue, which I think has been rectified with some rest and rehab. His bullpen sessions so far have looked pretty dynamite and I think he'll bounce back on a normal progression now. What you get out of Clevinger will be really key, I'm not sure he tops 100 innings this year. Still think there's more depth signings to come once the world returns to normal.

Have the Padres given up on Lamet being a starter? It seems like a small adjustment somewhere in his pitch repertoire or delivery could keep him on the mound. He was absolutely devastating in 2020, a healthy Dinelson over a full season (25+ starts) could be as good as anyone the Padres have. Also, kudos to Nick Martinez for working his way back into a potential major league spot from The Japanese League. I have been to a few games in the Fukuoka Dome, not an easy place to pitch.

If the TJ didn't take the first time, I wonder if there's any circumstances where they'd consider a second one for Dinelson? Mike Clevinger did it … but from what I've read, TJ revisions aren't typically as successful as the primary. There are a few others who've recently undergone a second TJ who've had satisfactory results - just not enough of them to make any generalizations. I hope Lamet gets some solid advice.

The problem isn't the second surgery, it's the proximity between the two. Clevinger's first Tommy John surgery was in his collegiate days. Lamet having two in four years is a completely different animal.
