Fair enough - but Melvin DOES fit the San Diego M.O. - hire a guy with a very good track record, but who still has some question marks. (CAN Melvin get a talented team to the World Series? And if he can, can he get them to win it?)
Like I said, PTSD. Being a sports fan in San Diego is all about frustration and disappointment.

not excited by this hire. would have preferred stealing someone from the dodgers, red sox, houston, or the giants. we've tried moneyball here before and it didnt work. Teams that i mentioned are on another level of statistical analysis. this is like hiring Sandy Alderson again. Melvin and AJ will see the exit together.

Great hire - wouldn't be surprised if we look back at this hire like people looked back at the Giants hiring Bochy.

Melvin himself didn't ask for a "Moneyball" situation. That's an organizational thing.

Oakland has never run a payroll higher than 24th in baseball since he got there. They've been 29th or 30th multiple times. He's never had a roster like this and a team actually willing to spend. He's got a better managerial record than Bochy (Yeah, I know, rings...) and is lauded for his communication skills and his ability to adapt to the roster. It's a massive improvement. Don't forget, he also managed the Diamondbacks, and they DID spend money. And, yeah, with Bochy - RINGS. MULTIPLE Rings. Arizona's payroll never exceeded 16th under his tenure and was bottom ten multiple times. Players win rings, too. Bochy would have two rings if not for a generational performance by Madison Bumgarner in Game 7, for example.

They literally defined modern sabermetrics. They are unfortunately a poverty organization. Melvin's on record saying he adapts to the way the game changes. You have to hire the right guy, not the right organization.

That said, even after this past debacle of a Padre 2nd half, I truly think the SD worm is starting to turn, for both the Pads and Aztecs.

Fouts simply had the worst day of his professional career - 5 picks against the undermanned Houston. Chargers were an easy pick to win it all, but alas. You are not alone in your misery. Now get out of your funk and get behind your Aztecs.

BTW, you did have a national championship, the 1973 ncaa champion volleyball team. I was there. I was stoned. With my wife of 48 years.

I don't even count the '63 Chargers since the AFL was still considered to be a minor league at the time. (The USFL or XFL of it's day.)

Back to topic, it will be interesting to see who Melvin favors in the rotation. Is Paddock still in the picture? Clevenger? Lamet?

In case anyone doubted the importance of having Bo Mel at the helm: the A's, typically always competitive under him, are now 20-36 (most losses in MLB).

He wouldn't have been able to do very much with the current A's roster. The A's have bad pitching and no hitting. Other than that... Probably why the A's were willing to part ways with him.

Oakland is in line to lose yet another team. Disastrous.
