Not exactly "just learned"... he'd been using it (the cut fastball) in Spring Training, but as far as I know, this was the first time he used it as a key part of the gameplan. It looks like they may be moving it ahead of the curveball in his pitch selections. If he just started throwing it this Spring Training, then that's considered, "just learned it." Anyway, whatever he did last outing, keep doing it Chris!!!Agreed. What I like most about CP is his game face, reminds me of Dave Stewart. I would love nothing more than CP to become the clear-cut #1 ace of this team.

Right now Lamet and Davies have been pitching the best while Paddack and Richards have been more inconsistent.

Paddack inconsistent.
That 5th run off Strahm for Oakland was on Nola. Horrible passed ball that put the runner on second and of course the next guy gets an RBI single.

Probably should give the guy a break when he's been for 96 hours and has to catch a brand new staff when he's not a full time catcher. Game was basically over after 2 innings.

You can give him a break, but he's a pro and that was a bad mistake. I like Nolas bat though.

Maybe it’s time we see Gore take some starts.

Maybe it’s time we see Gore take some starts. More than one rumor about MacKenzie having some issues at satellite camp. theathletic.com/2048881/2020/09/07/padres-mailbag-chris-paddack-mackenzie-gore-and-other-september-questions/"With Paddack, the challenges appear to be both mental and mechanical — not uncommon for a young pitcher in his second season. His command, which was excellent throughout 2019, has not been there. He has lost two to three inches in vertical movement on his fastball, an indication that he might be getting around the baseball (possibly a byproduct of incorporating two new secondary pitches in a revamped curveball and a cutter). Meanwhile, Paddack and the Padres have suggested that he might be tipping pitches, which would be a killer for someone who still leans heavily on two offerings. People who watch pitchers for a living aren’t sure Paddack can fix all of these problems in time for the postseason. The Padres claim he’s close to a course correction, but with so little time left, it might not happen until the offseason. Still, it’s too early to set a playoff rotation. We will see what the rest of the month brings." " WHEN WILL MACKENZIE GORE ACTUALLY GET A SHOT? RUMORS HE HAS THE YIPS, ANY TRUTH?— J.O.S.H. (@_BROJAN_) SEPTEMBER 6, 2020 With the acquisition of Clevinger, MacKenzie Gore likely doesn’t crack the roster until next season. The Padres don’t view their top prospect as a bullpen fit. Unlike Luis Patiño, Gore doesn’t have the type of stuff that projects to play up significantly in such a role. On top of that, it’s true that he hasn’t had the smoothest summer. “Yips” is too extreme a description — and Gore has looked noticeably better lately — but the lefty has worked through some mechanical problems. (Similar to Paddack, his fastball hasn’t moved exactly the way it did last year.) Which is why the Padres don’t think Gore is ready yet. That probably would be the case even if they hadn’t acquired a starter. In spring training, team officials thought Gore could surface around the midway point of the season, but this has been an unprecedented summer for player development. After a pandemic shutdown, and without the benefit of real games, it’s not surprising that some prospects have struggled." --Dennis Lin, The Athletic

It's not the most immediate need in a bizarre player development environment right now. Development isn't a linear process, especially with pitchers. TINSTAAP.

Just reported on tv that Paddack left with a sprained ankle. Tests negative. Pitched the 2nd with wrapped ankle, after hurting his push/slide foot in the 1st. Still looked sharp, and favoring the ankle may explain slight slip in velocity. Really too bad because he threw well. Wasn't aiming or overthrowing.

Tingler said in the post game they'll take a look today & see how the swelling is going, but they're optimistic. They don't appear to be worried about it. He didn't specifically say he should be fine for his next start or if he'll miss next week's game against the Dodgers - it'll depend upon how quick it heals. But they believe they got it early, before anything serious could happen. On ESPN's game schedule he's been removed from next Tuesday's start, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything. A couple off days in the next couple weeks doesn't hurt either. It'll be interesting to see how they change & set up their rotation, even if Paddack was healthy? Do they stay 5 man with some pitching on the 6th day, or tweak it?
