Balsley didn't do a ton of work with the minors. I didn't say a ton, but I do know he was involved and cared. Pitchers listened to him, and really respected him. Bottom line is they had a very good relationship and Balsley is credited heavily with his development. He cared. Yes.

In John's perfect world, Tom Craft is still coaching at SDSU as HC and Balsley is managing the Pads.....
*Kidding*

Well, for some reason you seem to want to diminish those credentials. Because they don't mean anything. Ownerships keep guys around for a variety of reasons. What you're saying isn't a revelation. At the same time, they went in a different direction and had him stick around for another year so his son could graduate.

It seems like it needed to be revealed to you. Ask the players, and management what they thought of him as a teacher. Have you listened to the testimonies from players about what Balsley meant to them? If you have, then you're just simply not a Balsley fan at all.

You're saying that he stuck around for 15 seasons because he was good. Well, yeah. Obvious. The team went in a different direction though because there was some resistance (whether it was him directly or something else) to some new things they wanted to try. The message was going kind of stale. The game evolved. His reputation was based on Yates and Hand, primarily. Was he a good teacher? Yes. Was it time for a different voice? Probably.

I can agree that a new voice may be needed. I'm realistic. Like I said before, your voice can lose it's luster after awhile as a coach. He's helped and influenced soooo many though, including Jake Peavy.

was Paddack throwing a 3rd pitch more? I thought I heard the announcers say that he was throwing a pitch that he had just learned.

Not exactly "just learned"... he'd been using it (the cut fastball) in Spring Training, but as far as I know, this was the first time he used it as a key part of the gameplan. It looks like they may be moving it ahead of the curveball in his pitch selections.

Anyway, whatever he did last outing, keep doing it Chris!!!
