Sounds like only(major) problem is bruising/contusions and and clotting? He is doing everything but, physical contact. We will see him when he plays and not sooner.

I'll take what Dutch said over some unknown person...I am more than sure Dutch is in the loop of what is going on with Nathan's health...and if it was going slow or bad...he wouldn't say there was a "strong chance" he would return on a specific date.... thats an optimistic way of looking at it. Coaches are in the business of optimism. Smoketree would have good sources. so im going to take what he says as highly probable. even then it does not change the narrative. in fact when he plays may be entirely up to his family and handlers. With injuries i'd say coaches won't say anything unless they are almost certain. The way dutcher has been talking of late suggests barring a setback NM will play in the tourney. Coaches don't like to speculate on injuries and i'm going to go out on a limb and say dutcher isn't speculating.

Going to be a decision by the medical staff and what Nathan thinks is best for him - as it should be
Dutcher has usually been one who plays it on the conservative side

Of course, that's all he can do right now. I look forward to when Nathan does come back! Hopefully soon!

Xtra 1360 just said there is good news about Mensah! Dutch is on now, hoping to hear what it is.

"Some hurdles he has to clear...... but he looks really good."
Didn't catch the interview saw this quote on their Twitter feed.

Sounds like they are giving KJ rest and hoping his ankle gets healthy by tomorrow. He'll play no matter what but how much will depend on how the ankle heals.
Mensah is at a point where it sounds like it's just getting clearance from the doctors and maybe lawyers. He's been working out real hard and is in really good shape but won't be playing 20 minutes or anything like that if he gets the ok.
Zeigler also commented that the guys really want UNLV and Utah State.

Missed the Dutcher interview on 1360 earlier this morning and joined the Zeigler interview in progress.
Here's what I caught. He was in the middle of talking about Mensah:
* Mensah looks good and is in great shape. He's been working out and doing a lot of non-contact stuff with the team. * The three-month recovery timeline from a blood clot in your lungs is about as short as most medical journals/studies advise. * Mensah still has some hurdles to clear. He needs to get the green light to come off blood thinners. Then he needs a few days off blood thinners before he can start doing full drills and practices with contact. * No matter how optimistic Dutcher is, this isn't his decision. It's a doctor's decision. It's a medical decision. And it's likely also a university risk management decision, as well. So several things have to fall into place. Not impossible, but also not a slam dunk, so to speak. * Mensah, even if cleared, wouldn't be playing 30 min. a game. But he's an important piece to have. He's a great rim protector with his 7'5" wingspan. He's not a prolific shot blocker like Spencer was, but he definitely alters shots and prevents a lot of people from driving the lane.

That works with the earlier, hopeful, time line. Mensah won't be available for the conference tournament, but has a good chance of being able to play in the NCAA tournament in 2 weeks.

I thought it was interesting that Arop got all backup C minutes behind Wetzell against Nevada and he was solid. Looks like that’s where we’re at for rest of the year with rotation down to 8. I’m guessing if mensah does come back he’ll only play about 8-12 mins pre game but will likely be a game changer at some point in the tournament.

Zeigler also commented that the guys really want UNLV and Utah State. Did he say why? Better matchups? Or do they just think these are the best teams and want a challenge?

I think 10-15 mins per game is a realistic target for Nate for the first weekend of the NCAA Tourney. By all accounts he's been working out pretty hard with the exception of contact drills. So... conditioning shouldn't be an issue. He'll obviously be a little rusty at first, but a 16 / 15 / 14 seed first-round opponent makes for a good warm up (praying we don't become another UVA). Should SDSU advance beyond that, I think up to 15-20 mins per game isn't out of the question for the second weekend. Then... well, let's just hope for the scenario where we have to discuss how many minutes per game Nate will play in the third weekend...

Nathan - still a medical decision and the med staff has to be the group that totally clears him
does give the coaches options with AG or Nathan . Would be helpful to have Nathan if we play USU and they have Q at full strength at the 5 . AG does provide valuable minutes but has problems with a taller center . Also if we have Nathan - Yanni - Matt is a solid defensive / rebounding group
also could be trouble for an opponent to match up with us .Yanni at the 4 and Matt at the 3
Would also guess that the team would like to have another opportunity at UNLV who gave us our only loss . USU can be a very difficult match up depending on how Q is playing for them -

Utah St. probably since they are the second best team in the league and beat us last year in the tournament. Also, our guys know they would look like puss ies if they ever said "we hope we get Air Force and Wyoming".

Umm, I really hate to do this but Nate's last game was December 28. If 90 days is the minimum, the earliest he could be cleared is March 27, which is the second day of the Sweet Sixteen games.
I really hope that Dutcher knows something that we don't and/or Mensah is a medical marvel to whom standard recovery timelines don't apply.

I’m pretty sure Dutcher wouldn’t be saying he could be ready for the start of the tournament if it’s a physical impossibility. We obviously don’t have all the information.
