Jon Schaeffer is the 1360 Aztec guy who interviews Dutcher after games. Pretty sure he's not going to report some wishful thinking. Dutcher's been conservative all season when talking about injuries, don't see any reason why he would say something like this unless it's a distinct possibility leaning towards a probability. There's been nothing to suggest it's a "probability". Dutcher is saying the same thing he's been saying for weeks - the HOPE is to have him back by March, but they don't really know. Here's Dutcher's complete statement; note the part Schaeffer omitted: "Our hope is still to have him back. When that is, I’m not sure. We’re hoping to have him back, if not by the Mountain West Tournament, then the NCAA Tournament." Step one is just getting him cleared for contact. Until that happens there's no real timetable. Much appreciated. Gives context to the earlier post.

Yes, getting the entire quote is a bit less encouraging than what was in the original tweet...BUT, for Dutcher to say that there is a possibility he could play in less than a month is a reason for optimism in my book!

So, yes it is hope... NM has received basically the same treatment that RS received and has, so far, responded in the same way, if he continues to progress as RS did then yes he will be back in March at some time, but there is no way to know for sure until March...

There most assuredly is a probability that Nathan will return; every outcome to everything has an associated probability of occurring.

Also remember, the fact he traveled with with the team to Vegas and ABQ is itself a sign of progress, as he previously had not been allowed to fly with the team since his diagnosis.

Step one indeed. But luckily for him and us, there is ONLY one step. It isn’t like he’s hurting or needs to get a repaired leg back underneath him... once he’s cleared for contact he’s good to go.

So we all relax and enjoy the guys that are currently able to play - do hope that AG can play as soon as possible- Dutcher was hoping that AG would be practicing this week and hopes to play against AFA
Nathan - as stated- Our hope is still to have Nathan back. When- we are not sure .
Step one get him cleared by the Medical staff .

Anybody know if he would qualify for a medical red shirt if he doesn't come back this year?

per Go Aztecs Nathan has played in 14 games
Would guess that Dutcher and the coaches will take it step by step and go with whatever the med staff says
Any games Nathan would be able to play would be a bonus this year and very welcome but health comes first

Nathan was one of my favorite players and even if he can give us 10-15 mins a game, that would be huge. He is amazing on post defense and is the best rebounder on the team. We really lack bigs depth after him. Nolan is solid as a third big but he fouls too much and just an average scorer. Yanni tends to pick up a foul or two so depth is really important
