Can't wait to see what Pham does between Tatis and Machado.

If Pham were 3 years younger this would be a good deal for the Padres. He's not, so it's not. He's already past his prime. And he hit only .248 in his last 98 games in the NL. And in 2016 he only hit .228 - he's inconsistent. The 2020 line-up looks like a .500 team. Whoop-de-f***ing-doo! Unless they can consistently come up with winning seasons I'm not going to be excited. Win for a year or two then suck again for 7 or 8 years. No. Thank. You. Some posters are acting like 32 is the new 40. Geez. Sign me up for a .370 OBP and .844 OPS all day.

Ok, Pham’s health cleared he’s the new RF.
Tatis Pham Machado Hosmer Grisham Myers Profar Mejia
That’s a pretty decent lineup. I’m excited to see Tatis, he’s going to eventually develop into the best player in the NL, 40-40 threat.
Paddack, Lamet, Richards, Lucchesi, Davies/Gore.....still holding out hope for a Kluber trade. You still need a couple of 150-200 inning starters to save the bullpen for August/September.

"As part of a separate trade, in came Jurickson Profar, who plays second base but also has experience at shortstop, third, first and left field. As part of the Pham deal, in came prospect Jake Cronenworth, who can play second, third, short, left and even the roles of opener and reliever. It has been an offseason focused on filling needs and acquiring versatility. Profar, Cronenworth, Pham and Grisham could address some, if not all, of the Padres’ questions at second and in the outfield. The same outfield seems to remain the most direct avenue for a boost; even after landing a proven player like Pham, the Padres have pursued impact hitters while downplaying, but not dismissing, their need for veteran pitching. They ended last season with undisputed starters at third (Manny Machado), short (Fernando Tatis Jr.) and first (Eric Hosmer). The additions of Pham and Profar, who could combine to make more than $14 million next year, still leave San Diego with obvious positional questions at center field, right field and catcher." theathletic.com/1451472/2019/12/11/intent-on-finding-more-upgrades-padres-continue-canvassing-the-league-for-possible-trades/"In recent weeks, San Diego has inquired about the Kansas City’s Whit Merrifield, sources told The Athletic. Merrifield, who hit .303/.358/.451 across the last two seasons, earned a 2019 All-Star berth as a second baseman. But he also is a capable right fielder who can slide over to center. And he is due just $15.25 million over the final three seasons of a team-friendly extension. The same factors seemingly put Merrifield out of reach. Despite Merrifield’s age and the Royals’ state of rebuilding, general manager Dayton Moore has repeatedly and publicly stated his intention to keep the affordable, productive 30-year-old. There is little indication that the Padres have made headway in their attempts to pry Merrifield away from Kansas City, which would require a steep return. Further, San Diego is fielding an estimated payroll above $140 million, meaning it is above its preferred target for Opening Day. Two sources on Tuesday indicated that trade discussions involving Merrifield had ground to a halt, even as the Padres continued to explore other possibilities. But to make another significant addition, GM A.J. Preller may have to first shed money."

Merrifield would be AWESOME. But, the prospect haul it would take would make some fans wince.
And Preller would have to find a taker for Myers somehow.
Consider it unlikely....but fun to talk about.

The Padres could get it done, but the market again has reflected that teams are not paying a premium for second base options. So many guys available out there. Merrifield is on the wrong side of 30, with a speed based game. Dangerous combination.

I personally see more to Whit's game than speed. And still, he's "only" 30. He should have 3-5 years of prime ball left.
He has a bit of pop (15-20 homers a year), great contact rate, .344 career OBP, and .800+ OPS each of the last two seasons while playing solid defense. 5.5 and 4.0 WAR the last two seasons, that's great.
That being said, I don't think Moore lets him go for a reasonable haul - I suspect the price will be too high for AJ to want.

I would still take him, but his sprint speed has declined 2 years in a row from 2017. He's projected to be around a 105 wRC+ hitter, just above league average. If he stays at second and doesn't move around the outfield, he's probably a 3-ish WAR player. Morejon would be a good starting piece. Maybe a Potts type.

Whit Merrifield is a great player. If the Padres can deal for him I would pull the trigger.
That being said, the primary focus still needs to be FRONTLINE STARTING PITCHER. Unfortunately Preller thinks the world of his prospect pitchers, which worries me he will ignore this glaring need, planning on Paddack, Luchessi or Lamet having a CY Young type of season. It could happen, but don’t hold your breath. If the target year is 2020, an ace needs to be brought into the rotation.

They are probably the most active team on the market, but that doesn't mean much when other teams prices are sky high. And offense is still a bigger issue than pitching.

Padres were apparently close to a deal last night (likely Merrifield), but couldn't close it.
