Thought he threw really well. Stuff and velocity is there for not having thrown in 14 months. All about health and staying on the mound going forward. Encouraging first step towards that end. Except he has thrown. 9.1 innings in the minor leagues this year. I want to see the Padres run him out there every 5 or 6 days through the end of the season. He doesn't have to throw many pitches--just get him out there. You obviously know I meant on a Major League mound, which is much different than pitching in Visalia or Lake Elsinore.

I would think those minor league innings were quite important. If he hadn't done those, he certainly wouldn't have been pitching last night. I will say this--Richards did seem to have pretty good velocity on his pitches.

Movement, velocity, it was all there. His Statcast data after the start was literally off the charts.

I still hated to have to pay him to basically not pitch (or actually, pay him to rehab) this season. but the Padres can really use a decent starter next year, and Richards just might be that guy. Do you think the Padres go after another starter in the off-season, and if you do, do you think they would give him more than a 1 year deal?

Paying him a year of dead money means nothing really in the long run. It will all be offset (and a lot more) if he is capable next year of throwing 150 innings or so. If he's a 2 WAR pitcher, you're getting a couple million in surplus value. And yes, they are going to attempt to get a frontline starter. Syndergaard, et al. They are trying to get someone with multiple years of control via trade. Signing a guy is much more difficult, especially if they land outside the top 10 in the draft.

He looked good, especially in the first inning.
Nasty.
Pencil him in the rotation next year as the number 2 or 3 starter.
