Starting rotation: Strahm $581M, Lucchese $565M, Lauer $562M, Margevicius $555M, Paddack $555M; totaling ~$2,818,000. Relief pitchers: Yates $3,062M, Stammen $2,250M,Warren $2,000M, Erlin $1,450M, Loup $1,200M, Stock $559M, Wisler $570M, Wingenter $557M; totaling ~$12,998M.
Some observations. !.) The bullpen is being paid more than 4X the starters. Is any other team doing that? 2.) Last year the starting pitchers were making ~$7,ooo,ooo.oo, IIRC. Do the Pads have the lowest rotation payroll in MLB? 3.) Considering what the Pads are spending on starters, the results are encouraging, so far. 60% win rate through yesterday.

That's what happens when you have two rookies, 2 second year players, and a converted reliever in your rotation. What does all the M's after the Money numbers stand for?

Thousands. Think of Roman numerals, where M=1000. In this case, Dollars.

The salaries of the starters is, indeed, due to their rookie/2nd year status. The rookies are making ML minimum, the others a slight increase in their 2nd or 3rd year. Yates, a veteran, and now a proven "closer", is being paid for that experience and performance level, as are most of the others. Stock, Wisler, and Wingenter, being still very young and lacking much ML experience are still just above ML minimum. Check back in 4-6 years, and if those guys are still starting in the majors (and based on what I've seen so far, most of them will be), they'll be pulling in salaries in the Multimillion range. Last year's starters included several veteran "retreads" (example: Clayton Richard) as the team was marking time until the "kiddie corps" was ready for prime time. As veterans, they would be pulling in salaries in the 1-3 million range. Expect the kiddie corps to remain the core of the pitching staff for years to come, and be supplemented by guys like Gore, Morejon, and other upcoming gems. A bargain indeed!
