In a 9-0 decision SCOTUS has put the brakes on civil forfeiture. Maybe.
I say maybe because of the way they seemed to rule. It was based upon the eighth amendments prohibition against excessive bail. I've long had a problem with the concept of civil forfeiture. The law was intended to go after the proceeds of major drug dealers not the average citizen. I believe it was intended, though not codified, to only be applied after conviction and proof that what was being ceased was the result of drug sales. What it has become is nothing more than 'legal' theft.
Good for SCOTUS.

When are the assets of the Sackler family going to be seized? Like, the 12th of never. In the United States those with enough money can do as they please without fear of prosecution. Isn't the Citizens United decision grand? It resulted in the type of elite privilege endorsed by the Supreme Court majority in that opinion.
