From Zeigler this morning in the U-T. IMO, lots of questions, not a lot of concrete answers: www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sports/aztecs/sd-sp-sdsu-basketball-next-season-20180327-story.htmlA few pertinent snippets from this long, detailed piece: Who’s going? Before the Aztecs can start crystalizing a vision for next season, they have to determine who’s going to be around for next season. Already, we know three seniors who combined for 71 starts last season are gone: Trey Kell, Malik Pope and Kameron Rooks. And midway through the season, Missouri transfer Montaque Gill-Caesar left the team. There could be more. No player struggled more to adapt to Dutcher’s ever-shifting rotation than fourth-year junior Max Montana, and the 6-foot-9 forward needs only two summer school classes to graduate, which he says he intends to do. That allows him to transfer for his final season of eligibility without sitting out a year. Will he? Montana was non-committal when asked in the locker room after the loss against Houston, saying: “I’m just taking it day by day at this point.” There’s also McDaniels, who provisionally entered the NBA Draft but didn’t hire an agent to allow him to retain his college eligibility. Logic suggests he’ll return – he currently does not appear in any of the major mock drafts – but those around him believe there’s a legitimate chance he could turn pro and privately say he’s no lock to come back. Another possible departure is associate head coach Justin Hutson, whose name is annually connected with head coach openings across the West (as it should be). This year, it’s Fresno State. Hutson grew up in the San Joaquin Valley and won a pair of NCAA Division II titles at Bakersfield, but the opening is just now entering the interview phase. Who’s coming? The scholarship math: The Aztecs have three for their departing seniors, one for Gill-Caesar and one they didn’t use this season. And they have three incoming freshmen: 6-10 Joel Mensah, 6-10 Nathan Mensah and 6-2 guard Jordan Campbell. That leaves Dutcher with at least two open scholarships and possibily more, should Montana or McDaniels leave. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, especially in what could be a volatile offseason for college basketball. Programs like Arizona and USC could face upheaval if the NCAA comes down on them for their connections to the FBI corruption probe, and SDSU might be an attractive destination for players looking for a new home in this time zone. “The transfer market,” Dutcher said, “is just starting to heat up.” In addition, the Aztecs have been scouting junior colleges more than usual and are among the five finalists (with SMU, Dayton, Grand Canyon and Texas A&M) for former Baylor guard Wendell Mitchell – considered by some the nation’s top JC player. A top juco wing is said to be in their sights as well. Assistant coach Tim Shelton spent last week at the JC national champion tournament in Hutchison, Kan. (which was won by Texas JC South Plains and former SDSU guard Ben Perez). What are the most pressing needs: A scoring guard, a slashing wing, a shot blocker, all of the above? “It’s almost like the NFL Draft: You can say you need this position, but you have to take the best available player and then see how it shakes out,” Dutcher said. “But we’re well positioned. We’ve got scholarships where if the right player comes along, we can go after him. And if we don’t take anybody, we’ve got a good team anyways.” * * * * Also, I'm definitely booking my reservations to Maui. Gonna be some great bball. The nonconference tournament, during Thanksgiving Week, is the Maui Invitational. The eight-team field includes No. 3 Xavier, No. 8 Gonzaga, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 Arizona and No. 19 Auburn, plus Iowa State and Illinois.

I would be very surprised if Montana is back. He'll be missed if he leaves, he went through a lot here, knees etcetera and I think he could still contribute a lot. GO AZTECS!!

Next couple of months very important for Dutcher and the team . He may be looking for a new assistant head coach as he heads to Final 4 . Also recruiting trail for the 2018-19 team and beyond . Also trying to set up more OOC games . Replacing Trey and Malik production and leadership - still to be resolved . So are we better or worse heading into 2018-19 ?
MW could be very interesting next season if Zags join top 10 team, Nevada - depending on who comes back -could be a top 10 team . Lobos very much improved - with transfers . UNLV takes hit with McCoy leaving . BSU loses top player .

That's what happens when you have that kind of field.

I like this team a lot and think that with the right additions they could be a solid seed in the dance next year...

Started looking for hotel reservations months ago and they're few and far between and expensive as hell. Have a timeshare there and it's booked solid. That's what happens when you have that kind of field. Not sure we want to be on Duke's side of the bracket. slate.com/culture/2018/03/dukes-regeneration-means-were-all-doomed.htmlSo who will poor Mike Krzyzewski have suiting up for him next season? Let’s take a look at the old recruiting rankings. It appears Duke has signed the best high school basketball player in the country. Well, that should help alleviate some of the pain of 2018. It also seems that Duke has signed the second-best high school basketball player in the country. Kudos to Coach K. Finally, Duke has a commitment from … the third-best high school basketball player in the country. Dammit. The No. 1 guy is R.J. Barrett, a 6-foot-6 swingman who is already considered a near lock to be the top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Even more impressive is the fact that he seems poised to turn Canada into a basketball superpower. The Ontario-born Barrett led his national team to a first-place finish at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 World Cup, the country’s first medal at that event. Joining Barrett in Durham will be fellow wing Cam Reddish. At 6 feet 8 inches, Reddish is a superb defender who’s also capable of playing point guard. He’s exactly the kind of guy you would use to counter R.J. Barrett, but, unfortunately for the 350 Division I teams that aren’t Duke, Reddish and Barrett will be playing on the same team. And then there’s Zion Williamson, the greatest player in the history of Instagram. On Monday, Williamson won the McDonald’s All-American dunk contest, meaning it took only 24 hours for Duke to start winning things again after its heartbreaking loss to Kansas. Oh, and there’s also Tre Jones (the younger brother of former Duke point guard Tyus Jones), who happens to be the ninth-ranked high schooler in the country. Were he to commit to your favorite school, Jones would instantly make them a contender. But he’s not going to your favorite school. He’s going to Duke. Before this year, no team had ever brought in a recruiting class that included the country’s top three recruits. If anyone was going to pull off such a feat, it seemed like it was going to be Kentucky’s John Calipari, who pioneered and mastered the one-and-done approach to college basketball team building. For decades, Krzyzewski built the country’s most successful program on the backs of four-year players. Now, Duke attracts more NBA talent than the New York Knicks.

Mc Donalds All Star HS game 3/28 at 4 pm on ESPN . Duke will be very good next year . So will Zags . Xavier will need to replace their HC - who is leaving for Louisville , Zona - will be interesting to see what happens for their recruiting - as they lose a lot of players . Field is loaded and we could be considered in the teams rated 5-8 with tough opening game .
MW teams as of now- if guys come back to Nevada and the Lobos could be teams that will be favored in MW - may want to glance at their opinions of their teams for 2018-19 . Likely to be rated higher then the Aztecs- losing Coach H will also hurt . We have numerous "potential " players but also lost a lot .
Max would guess he wants to be a starter his senior year at the 3 position not play the 4 or even the 5 . So wonder if he comes back . Especially if we add a scoring guard or forward .
Defense we lose a lot with Trey and Malik going - in addition to scoring , leadership , passing , defense , rebounding . Will Devon , JH, Matt and others be guys that can provide that leadership and other parts of the game , not just offense but defense and making the better decisions with the ball and team basketball? .
Do hope that Jalen is back - defenses will key on him as they did Malik . if so - will need others to step up at the 5 - hope Nolan and Nathan can at least do it on defense plus provide some consistent offense. Nathan did not get as much PT this year at Findlay with Bol Bol there . Very important that he be here for both summer sessions .
Coaches should know what to expect from Adam . Jordan Campbell did not play this year working on academics . Joel high motor and lean similar to Jalen and will be making adjustment from HS to college ball - guys are bigger , more physical and quicker then in HS .
Should be a very interesting and important time - next few months for the coaches to figure who they have for 2018-19 and how they can get the most out of the team
Did see that we have USD at home and CAL road game has that been confirmed ?. Importance of OOC has been told to most non P6 schools

2 most interesting things are McDaniels might leave and we are targetting a juco wing to go along with mitchell.

2 most interesting things are McDaniels might leave and we are targetting a juco wing to go along with mitchell. My thoughts exactly. Think they're referring to McCoy? I've always thought it was 1 or the other, not both. Still think it is, with the other being a transfer rather than 2 JC's. Just can't see McD leaving after playing just 1 year. He could develop his talents quicker leaving, being full-time, but he's never had the offense go through him & he could grow a ton in that capacity.

Nevada if all there guys come back . Lobos with new quality players adding to their team that lost to us in MW final , should be quite good . Could place us about #3 of returning MW teams . Now as you say important to schedule a quality OOC and win games . Key factor for any non P6 conference .
Jalen - leaving / trying to get invite to Combine. will be good for him to see how he compares to other quality players . Do think there be even more players putting their name out there and there will be a lot of them so hope he returns.
As article says Dutcher looking to add quality players - hope it is a position you need help in the most . guard , forward or defender down low . Quality over quantity . Key is to be looking in a variety of places for them and hope they want to come here .JC , Transfer , Late HS , Grad .... last year we were fortunate to have scholarship open for Matt- who could be a slashing wing .

Aztecs need at least two good grad transfers. A rim protector and a forward, since there is no visibility on the intentions of Jalen or Max.
A PG or a slashing wing would also get plenty of PT.

I'm hoping Watson will look at a lot of tape of himself from this year, and in the off season, work on the fact that he doesn't need to go to the hole so recklessly, and just simply pick his spots.
I really like him. He can be a dangerous offensive player, but he needs to be more in control.

same should be said for JH and Matt . Play under control - looking up at the full court for best opportunities for the team . Especially if Jalen is back - need more touches inside . more passing by all the guys .

This sounds more like a description of Hemsley than Watson....Hemsley's the most out of control player we've had in a while.
