Kell and Hemsley have been hugely disappointing. Coming into last season there was plenty of talk about “best backcourt in the MWC” and even the West. Now, more than a year later, there is little connecting them to their earlier accolades. We have a Senior who peaked as a sophomore and a junior who has peaked as a freshman. I hope our infusion of youth brings mor success next year.

The team just has to be crushed. Clearly dominating UNM in the first half, and then losing their 3rd straight. I hope Brian Dutcher is the winner I think he is.

Once again comes back to lack of killer instinct, leadership and toughness.

Once again comes back to lack of killer instinct, leadership and toughness. It isn’t any of those intangible traits. We just aren’t good enough. It’s all about making shots and getting stops. We didn’t and haven’t.

It’s not about talent or traits... we are just soft. And we have recruited these soft / weak players for too long. I’m hoping coach Dutcher changes this so we can stop losing in an embarrassing fashion

This is not a team it is a bunch of individuals playing basketball. When I watch I don't get the feeling of any sort of energy between the players or chemistry. The offense stinks, too much dribbling and no passing or moving without the ball. Yesterday I watched Matt M. dribble out the shot clock and then pass to TK with 5 seconds left to shoot, TK ended up throwing up a bad 3 ball. Not good team work or forethought.
Once the game plan is figured out by the other team by making adjustments, where are our adjustments? UNM started to over play us on defense and force us farther from the basket. Did we adjust? No we kept running the same stuff. Easy adjustment is that when your man over plays you go to the basket and get a backdoor pass. Coaching? Players?
When UNM tied the game where was the TO to set up a good play with a couple of options to get a basket? Coaching? This team as it is now comprised will not beat Nevada or Boise in a 100 years. Not that those two teams have a lot better players, but because those two teams are teams and we are not a team. Individuals sacrifice for the good of the team. The one play all year that points this out was the 35 foot heave by Max in garbage time against San Jose. Purely selfish and the next game he sits on the end of the bench and pouts about lack of playing time. Is Dutcher is losing control of the locker room? I hope not. I do think there is one or two players who are more oriented too themselves then to the team.

Just an uninformed fan's take, FWIW: Coaching and fatigue.
As has happened in other games this year, the team appeared gassed again late in the game, leading to reduced movement on offense, defensive lapses, not getting a leg pop on jump shots, and enhancing the demoralization that can occur when you see a lead slipping away.
This is understandable given our apparent desire to run the floor in transition, play a tenacious man defense, overcome the press, apply the press, crash the boards, and maintain movement on offense.
Possible solution(s) or crazy stupid ideas: 1) If a player like Kell is coming back from being sick or injured, make sure they get rest during the middle of the game. 2) Make sure the players you want to end what will likely be a close game are better rested. You can do this by giving bench players like Narain, Rooks, Montana, Hemsley, Schakel way more minutes on the floor late first half, early second half. 3) Trade a lead for starter rest. Against good or mediocre teams, and especially on the road, so what if you get behind by single digits. The game is likely to come down to the final 5 minutes anyway, no matter the score late in the first half. Although losing a big lead can be demoralizing, losing it for a reason may be less demoralizing. 4) Get in better shape. This will be critical for that third (or, yikes, fourth) MWC Tournament game. 5) Don't forget to get in some shooting AFTER practice when your legs are tired. 6) When the game is on the line, tell the players, like Coach Fish used to say, "Think a happy thought." It helps build confidence and helps get you out of that playing-not-to-lose mentality.
Other uninformed suggestions: A) If the refs are calling charges, start trying to take more of them. B) When defending a three point shooter, try harder to get your feet out beyond the arc. C) Tell Dutcher to call our players "young men" not "kids". Our players are proud, dedicated student athletes that work hard win or lose. They deserve and can thrive on a little more respect, which helps them respect one another, building camaraderie. D) Tell the players to take the lead of Kell and Pope by trying not to feel like the victim, and especially don't ever act like the victim.

Carry on.

You're right that he hasn't watched a Nevada game and/or understood what he is watching - they play almost exclusively isolation ball, but they have five talented players who can do it. Guess he also didn't watch the Boise game, we were in the game and even leading late. We also played much better team-oriented offense than they did - 4 more assists, 7 fewer turnovers. Better than even odds we beat them when they come to Viejas, provided Hutchison doesn't put up 40+ again.

It took Steve Fisher a couple years to weed out soft players inherited from his predecessor and unfortunately it's clear Brian Dutcher must use this season to do the same with regard to two or three players he inherited from Coach Fisher.

Title of this thread sums up this team to a tee.
I would also say this team is really good for the first half and downright abysmal for the second half.
Some serious changes are need with this program from top to bottom, imo.

Oh excuse me Mr. Basketball, please point out in the last paragraph what is "utter nonsense" And please enlighten us no nothings about your basketball credentials. "Isolation ball", exactly what is that? What you sit next to Fisher at the home games and pick up some coach speak and pass yourself off as a "Basketball Jones. When dealing with clowns expect a circus.
