I missed this when it was first posted. Food for thought, to be sure. It would be interesting to hear what the anti-gun lobby has to say about this. My guess is that the less extreme members of that group might well be sympathetic to the value of having a firearm in cases such as the Chilean earthquake. As for the more far out anti-gun people. . . perhaps they would lose their voices!

So what are you guys "for"? Just curious... conceal and carry, no permit anybody over 21 in California? That would suck in certain areas..... I've had some real whack jobs in my neighborhood "tooled up" to the max!! I maintain that in areas where people don't grow up with guns and learn how to use them properly, there are big problems. Do I feel nervous in Alaska when I see people with guns....no.... do I feel nervous in urban California when I see people with guns....yes...... night and day.

The "tooled up" whack jobs don't care about the law.
They do what they do...and laugh at the rest of us.
Restrictive gun laws just make for a permissive environment for those "whack jobs"... who, by the way, I despise just as much as you do.

So Sid.... what are you for in California?... please decribe your preference..similar to Arizona (recent)? Isn't your daughter in law enforcement?...what does she think? The point of the Chile article is that particularly in an urban environment during a catastrophic event, you had better be prepared to defend yourself and your family. The whack jobs in your neighborhood reinforce the point. I think in California, if someone wants to carry concealed in a public venue they should be able to do so... provided they meet reasonable training standards, and a background check. No arbitrary "good cause" factor as determined by the sheriff should be required, because it is abused. In this state, most sheriffs capriciously give out permits to politicians and their buddies, and deny everyone else. In other words, absent any disqualifying factor, the permit should be required to issue. Open but unloaded carry in any place where discharge of firearms is prohibited (current law) is fine with me. Loaded and open or concealed carry where the discharge of firearms is permitted is fine with me, too. Loaded and either open or concealed carry on one's own property should be unquestioned, unless the individual is a prohibited person because of a past violent felony conviction or a nut house commitment. So, although I won't criticize Arizona's law, I wouldn't necessarily endorse it for California. I'll ask my daughter what she thinks (she's a police sergeant), but most police officers I know will say in the case of catastrophic events, "You're going to be on your own, at least for a while. Be prepared."
