and Boise. Bottom line - most bloggers on the topic reside in the Midwest & East, and most have it in their minds there is no way the B12 will jump 2 time zones west. Possibly correctly, since that is our #1 obstacle. Therefore, we're overlooked.
What I find funny is when they mention a coach as the reason - Taggert, Frost, etc., when there's a very good chance NONE of the HC's at ANY of these institutions will be there in 2-3 years.
It's about the school & market, and much less about personnel (unless they have no faith in someone's administration).

would guess numerous B12 schools have been in San Diego for the Holiday Bowl ( when B12 was a participant) Know the AD's usually come for the game . Do the B12 presidents also attend ? wonder if the flight was maybe 2.5 hours ? Yes many of the B12 schools are in central time but for Texas , TCU , there are direct flights . Would hope total picture is most important . Plus the growth in TV market for their schools . But who knows when College Presidents are involved ?

Since bowls are big donor functions I'd assume the Presidents of the 2 schools would be there. They've been to every bowl game I've ever attended. It's not the Presidents who we need to worry about flight times - it's the coaches, like Patterson who have specifically said they do not want to get back in the early AM hours like they used to when they were in the MWC. That'll play among his President at TCU I'm sure. Not sure what you mean by "who knows when College Presidents are involved"? It's their presentation. It's ALL about the President. This is Hirshman's deal, just like you see Oklahoma's & UT's presidents being very vocal on the other side. It's THEIR baby. The AD's are secondary - they just grease the wheel & provide some stats.

Do opposing teams really fly home Saturday evening after the games? Damn, with our traditional 7:00 start, the games' end around 10:30, meaning the very soonest they'd get to the airport is midnight. If they charter, they could be in the air by 12:30, but if they're flying back to Texas for example, that would make them landing in UT or Dallas around 5:30 in the morning Texas time and probably getting to campus around 7:00 am! I can see why Patterson is so opposed to it. I'd always just assumed they'd stay the night.
Any even with say a 1:00 start, that puts them back on campus around 1:00 am. That is definitely a tough sell.

Coug, I know you keep bringing up the geography, and I read where Coach Patterson was concerned about late night travel, but that same argument applies to BYU, and it doesn't seem to be an issue with their chances. Seems to me there must be more significant impediments to the Aztecs getting in than just a map.

People think California and they think it's much further than the Rockies, plus in the case of TCU they've lived it. 2nd, BYU is a timezone ahead of us so even for the few schools we are as close to they would still get home an hour later. The Kansases, etc. of the world may disagree with you about BYU being as far as SDSU as well. I heard 2 key elements of SDSUs presentation to B12 was distance and education. Hopefully we made an impression.

Tulane: the only AAU school not in a P5 conference. Most all the schools ahead of SDSU are R1 rated (we are R2).
Academics matter... don't forget it's the university presidents who vote on this, not ADs.

My point was School Presidents have a different set of criteria then AD's . or TV networks when making a decision .

There isn't a candidate that will lift their boat. If we hear it as a reason when they decide, it will be total horse **** imo.

It's school Presidents voting, and one of the motivations for adding a high tier academic institution is exactly what you state - the B12 currently isn't known as an academic conference. They may very well be looking for the "halo affect" that happens when you add a high tier institution. I don't think it's enough, but it's definitely a factor & all it takes is a few Presidents wanting to lift the perception of academics in their conference.

Remember that scene in the Shawshank Redemption when the local businessman gave the warden a box with his wife's best pie and in the box was a lot of hundred dollar bills? That's the mentality we are dealing with, good old boys who respect good old cash. If SDSU wants into the Big 12, Ralph Rubio needs to send a combination plate of fish tacos with extra cabbage.

The funny thing is while people were reading & complaining about how SDSU wasn't initially listed as a candidate SDSU had already presented, and Sterk was actually involved in the presentation. : ) The NEXT phase is coming up, once they finish the Skype presentations with all 17-18. It's believed the B12 will bring in a select group in person within the next few weeks. All indications are it was very well received, although you never really know until the closed door meetings take place obviously.

My point was School Presidents have a different set of criteria then AD's . or TV networks when making a decision . Without a doubt, which is why people may be surprised by the impact of travel costs & academics in the equation. Even more so, there are certain presidents who have more clout as well, even if they have just 1 vote. So connecting with the right guys is very key. One thing to keep in mind - people (including myself) keep harping on the logic of bridging towards WVU & providing them a travel partner. They're ONE vote. If the rest of the bunch don't want to add more eastern trips & prefer the west, that's a bonus. What's the motivation for a Texas Tech to want another game well out to the east (i.e. Uconn, UCF) when SDSU (or BYU/CSU) is much closer (other than gaining an hour flying home vs. losing 2 of course)?
