We could have taken Watson instead of Zabo coming out of high school. Zabo was ranked higher but hasn't played that way. Watson had the rep in HS of being a bit of a ball hog that hadn't devoloped his jumper enough for the trade off to be worth it, but obviously people misevaluated and he has improved in college. Wait, what? These recruiting analysts might be off the mark a fair portion of the time? Sorta contradicting yourself... All of a sudden half of AztecMesa has better scouting notes on this kid than Dave Velasquez does. SMH. Sorry but I believe in these recruiting analysts that could easily get assistant jobs if they wanted.

As I wrote on the previous page "Difference is Malcolm Thomas had established himself as a player at Pepperdine, Billy White was ranked initially I believe by Rivals maybe then changed, Tapley wasn't ranked but I believe part of that was because of a injury. Of course evaluators miss on players, it is impossible to get thousands of legitimate prospects all right, but I'd say Eric Bossi and Josh Gershon both do an excellent job. Of course I'm rooting for this kid like any SDSU player, but I'm not counting on him making a big contribution. If he can fill an off the bench three and D role though, that has value. " Great coaches get evaluations incorrect as well. When you evaluate so many players especially in HS where competition varies and so many unpredictable factors go into play of course you going to miss on some players, that is logical. It doesn't mean Rivals/Scout doesn't do an amazing job. And you do realize that Fisher missed the initial evaluation on Watson too, right? Could have easily gotten him with a legitimate offer in junior/senior year, he always wanted to come here.

Adam's coach said he was a guy similar to JJ in that he makes very good decisions and his defensive stopper on the court Not that he was the "glue" guy. Seiko was on some very good AAU teams . He was not a 4 or 5 star rated player but had to play against plenty of them and did a very good job of guarding them . He went on to say Aztec coaches look at the players and how they perform on the court and off , not how many stars they are or where they are rated.

The fact that someone believes a recruiting analyst could get an assistant job "easily" is laughable. What, because they can evaluate players (like they are paid to) well? There are a lot more factors that go in to being a coach than evaluating a player's talent/shortcomings. Say what you want about Watson, we offered him, he chose to go elsewhere because we had already recruited the spot. He's elevated his game because he was a good player coming out of high school, now he's a really good player. Things tend to unfold a certain way for a reason. If the staff believes in Seiko enough to give him a scholarship, they've earned the benefit of the doubt after a decade and a half in my book.

What I find humorous are people drawing conclusions on a players college career before he's even played the summer circuit after his junior year and before his senior year in HIGH SCHOOL. How about letting him play this summer, or better yet next fall, before designated him to the 8th man role at SDSU. Unreal.
Unless people have seen this kid plays several times, like our coaches, you have no clue what their ceiling can be, especially at this age. Some highly rated players PEAK at 17; others just get started.
Re: the ratings, how many players have dropped & risen 20+ spots during their final seasons? Answers - MANY.

No it's not, both Bossi and Gershon have great reputations with coaches. If you think they couldn't have an assistant job by now, you are incredibly misinformed. And we offered Watson early in his HS career, by the time his junior/SR year came it was obvious his offer wasn't there anymore, it wasn't because "someone took his spot".

I have been tormented, for some years now, with recurrent thoughts that Fish and his staff actually do know what they are doing when recruiting and coaching players.

They have great reputations with coaches. Does this mean they can actually coach basketball? Go in to a living room and recruit a kid and his parents on the school? There are so many more elements to the job. Regarding Watson, he was a Big West level recruit coming out of high school. Gaudy numbers similar to another Watson (Javion) but he's overachieved to this point and added some depth to his game. Like I said, it happens.
