Zags early favorites. Yea, sometimes it pays to have open scholarships but you can't take too many grad transfers without turning over the roster too much.

making way for Marcus Lee?

making way for Marcus Lee? You don't clear out one of your best players to make room for anyone. This is a huge loss for Cal. More likely he's been hinting at leaving for a while, Conzo knew this, which is why they hadn't closed the door on Lee already. He may have needed to make sure he could in fact graduate early. I'll be curious to see if Cal releases him to possibly play at USC with his brother, if he doesn't end up at Gonzaga. Would be a huge lift for USC, given all their losses.

Cal could release him to play anywhere but the conference coaches/AD's whatever would still have to vote on it for him to get immediate eligibility The P12 changed that rule 2 years ago. They actually WANT players to stay within the conference, so no penalty. Cal's had a football player who transferred to Stanford & vice versa, without any vote necessary. pac-12.com/article/2014/10/27/pac-12-universities-adopt-sweeping-reforms-student-athletes-guaranteeing

Its all about timing, 675+ transfers, so far. Watson is not a bad addition to SDSU. Oddly enough we recruited both Jordan and Jonah Matthews and missed out on both. CAL and USC, now Jordan will wind up in the MWC, WCC or will be a flyer for a P5 school looking for immediate points.

Dude is a pure scorer and will be a pivotal player in the big dance. He sure waited until late to announce. He has NBA grade scoring abilities in my opinion. I'm sure his options include anyone with an open scholarship looking for that key piece to make the final four.

The writing was on the wall for Matthews, yes I believe that he was asked to find other options.

Definitely not a "win" for Cal as it relates to THIS year. It frees up a scholarship for NEXT year & softens the blow of losing Rabb, but there are about 10 other players Conzo would rather have gone than Mathews. He would have been their #2 option this year. Lundardi dropped them from a 5 to a 7 seed in his latest after learning he's leaving. If he ends up at Gonzaga (over USC or others) that definitely will be free gift & a big win for them.

A "free gift" is way better than a gift which you have to pay for.

Cal transfer Jordan Mathews told ESPN he will visit NC State on the 16th and Gonzaga on the 24th.guess the Zags don't have Mathews in the bag after all.

CAL wins all the way around, no word on where Matthews will play as a grad transfer looking at NC State and the Zags.
