Strong list of the 2016 recruiting class, seniors, juniors, sophomores & freshman. Bums me out that we went "zero for So California" in 2016. Informative reading for all. www.fullctpress.net/16-best-of-socal.html

I thought they were going to offer but never pulled the trigger. I think McWilliams is a very solid player and will light up the Aztecs a time or two before its all said and done. Matthews, Melton, Stanback and Cage... those ones hurt. Not getting even one of those guys is a tough pill to swallow.

Basketball is getting very similar to football . Not easy for MW schools to beat PAC in recruiting and could get worse .

Basketball is getting very similar to football . Not easy for MW schools to beat PAC in recruiting and could get worse . And just when did it used to be easy peezy to compete with the PAC? I posted this a year ago...worth re-hashing. Not easy to find but I did some web searching and found some interesting names in the LA Times history of their annual hoops award. Some incomplete (and maybe incorrect) as I could not find a real list. 1990: Ed O'Bannon (Artesia) 1997: Baron Davis (Crossroads) 1998: 1999: 2000: 2001: Tyson Chandler (Dominguez) --- NBA 2002: Hassan Adams (Westchester) --- UCONN 2003: Trevor Ariza (Westchester) --- UCLA 2004: Jordan Farmar (Taft) --- UCLA 2005: Amir Johnson (Westchester) --- 2006: James Harden (Artesia) --- ASU 2007: Chace Stanback (Fairfax) --- USC 2008: Jrue Holiday (North Hollywood Campbell Hall) --- UCLA 2009: Kawhi Leonard (King) --- SDSU 2010: Dwayne Polee, Jr. (Westchester) --- SDSU 2011: Ryan Anderson (LB Poly) --- UCLA 2012: Katin Reinhardt (Mater Dei) --- UNLV 2013: Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei) 2014: Stanley Johnson (Mater Dei) --- UNLV 2015: Jeremy Helmsley (Damien) --- SDSU 2016: Lonzo Ball (Chino Hills) - UCLA

But nice to see 3 Aztecs on the list DP II never really hit his stride. Tough career for the kid. Just missed on Ryan Anderson not UCLA but Zona too www.arizonawildcats.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209494866 on the bounce back. That would have been 4.

Then just this season transferred to Zona. Also, Hassan Adams went to Zona, not UCONN. Stanback went to UNLV, not USC also I believe.

So we have 2009 and 2015 top players . But for the most part they go to Arizona , UCLA but now USC is making strong in roads . We also used to do well in SAC area but that has also gone dry after Malik .

It used to be 3-4 teams which recruited at an elite level, so there were a lot more of the good players who were being recruited by mediocre P12 teams w/ mediocre to even bad facilities, & thus easier to win the battle.
Now with all the investments we've seen at Colorado, Oregon, Utah & even Oregon St, it's a VERY different playing field.

There are other monetary incentives the P5 schools can offer recruits now too, all made legal with the recent rule changes. One very popular incentive for recruits is travel costs being paid during breaks from school. Our school simply can't afford to keep up.

Putting recruits on this list almost guarantees they won't become AZTECS!

There are other monetary incentives the P5 schools can offer recruits now too, all made legal with the recent rule changes. One very popular incentive for recruits is travel costs being paid during breaks from school. Our school simply can't afford to keep up. That's factored into the total cost of attendance, and we do actually pay that. It's set by admissions. That's one area we've chosen to keep up. I believe most, although not all, of the MW teams have done the same.
Where we can't keep up are with the facilities, support staff (academic & sports-related), travel (# of charters for non-football, etc.) & even training-table related expenses (e.g. they can afford to hire full time chefs, provide better meals throughout, etc.), among a few others. Another obviously is the coaching budget, meaning a USC can pay a Bland $500k+, whereas our guys don't get anywhere near that. We've been lucky enough to minimize staff turnover....thus far.
Some conferences now offer guaranteed scholarships, meaning when they sign their LOI it's now good for 4 years. Many don't, but some do. I don't believe the MW decided to go down that route.
