The author says that Obama's popularity has fallen more than that of all but two of the post war presidents. In a way, it's worse than than. No one, perhaps in the entire history of U.S. politics, even came into office riding such a powerful wave of good will and good wishes. Yet, in less than a calendar year, he has managed to destroy almost every one of the assets he had coming into office.
With a little flexibility and foresight (such as forcing Pelosi and Reid up against a wall and telling them that they had damn well better toe his line rather than deferring to them and smiling while they alienated most of the country) Barack Obama could have gone a long way toward cementing his image as a post-partisan president who really was different.
That, apparently, was too hard for him to figure out. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of Obamaniacs who will resist the urge to face reality until the bitter end. (Compare that the the situation with Bush. Quite a number of observers on the right really criticized our last president when he strayed from sensible GOP precepts.)
