Jeremy Hemsley is a super star freshman. Here's a list of 12 other Aztec recruits and how they are faring in their rookie seasons:
Name POS School G Min Reb Pts J. Hemsley PG SDSU 16 30.1 3.0 13.6 S. Thompson SG OSU 14 19.1 1.3 9.7 C. Methu. PF USC 17 16.9 3.5 6.3 K. Small PG Ore 16 11.0 1.2 2.7 J. Simon SG UoA 13 7.1 1.5 2.5 B. Jones PF UTEP 8 11.3 2.1 2.4 R. Pflueger SG UND 9 7.0 0.9 1.3 C. Walker SF Stan 11 8.2 1.1 1.1 E. Aflakpui C Tem 6 5.2 1.2 1.0 N. Williams SG Aub 8 5.8 0.5 0.9 S. Barefied PG SMU 5 3.2 0.8 0.4 R. Smith SF UoA Injured ACL - out for the season M. Lovett PG SJU Not eligible, partial qualifier.
Barefield is transferring, most others riding the pine. Hemsley is a top 20 Freshman, and better than anyone who didn't sign with the Aztecs. The only worthwhile big is Methu. Both EA and Jones would have been asked to Red Shirt.

Chimezie Metu is the only guy from that list I'd really like to have on our roster.

I'd take Simon, Walker, Barefield or Metu in a second. Maybe none of them end up having NBA potential but they all have potential to play after college which is huge for quality of depth you have on the team.

I see PF / C as an area of greater need looking ahead to next season, not SG (considering we'll return both starters in the backcourt + add Gill-Caesar). But Thompson would probably be 2nd on that list for me.

I would like to see Justin Simon reconsider, Thompson's dad is an Asst at OSU and his brother Ethan will follow him up North. Ben Kone' too.

Pflueger might have been a refreshing option off the bench as someone who isn't afraid to drive to the basket, but there's no way he would be more impactful than Hemsley. Really glad we got Jeremy, I thought he would be here for 4 years but right now we'd be lucky to get 2-3 out of him. Good for Hemsley!

You can't just say if a kid is getting 7 minutes at ND he'd get 7 with SDSU, or he's be more (or less) productive. If Thompson wasn't playing behind 2 seniors & a junior, he'd be getting a ton of minutes & he's still have the occasional big game.
I'd love to have several of these guys as a 3rd 2015 commit, but in the long run we're OK with the transfers, Hemsley & Norain. That's still a great class, even if only 1 is contributing right now.
As others have said, if you had to pick just 1 as the "guy who got away" I'd go with Metu as well. Think he could have grown into a VERY good player for us eventually, and I'd love to have a little more depth inside right now. Don't think he'd be getting 15-16 minutes a game like he is at USC, but we could use him, and we probably wouldn't be needing to look for a grad-transfer right now.
I know I'm in the minority, but I still believe Jones is going to turn into a pretty good player as well. Just fighting injuries right now.l
Didn't we go after Boatright? That kid is going to be a PLAYER!

I watched Boatright in HS and he is impressive inside and outside. With Troy his #'s = 16 games 25.4 minutes, 5.1 reb and 12.5 pts/game. Marquese Chriss was another big that got away and went to at U-Dub = 15 games 22.5 min, 5.3 reb & 11.3pts/game. Too be honest we had early interest in them, not sure we ever got any love.

Yea, Chriss was always UW. He's going to be very good, yet may never be among the 3 best on his own team. Crazy. Boatright is going to be a star.

And don't look now, but USC is 15-3 and in second place in the Pac-12. They are 11-0 at home, they beat Arizona, and last night they beat UCLA by 14 at Pauley with Metu scoring 21 points with 8 rebounds.

They're still young (among 50 least experienced teams), and only getting better. Scary. Jacobs or McLaughlin could easily be P12 PoY. If Murray wasn't in the conference Boatright would be the guy for FR of the year right now.

As of today USC is higher rated then SDSU , has a bright future . We got JH very key recruit PG but after that USC has been able to out recruit SDSU . Bland is out there hustling . They got Metu and we tried BJ -who then left before he started . 2016 with the Parrish mess - USC got the HS recruits . red Shirts USC got Aaron , we got MG-C .
Of those on the list Metu , Thompson , Aaron maybe Barefield . We got JH, Narain, MG-C , would have preferred Metu, or red Shirt J. Williams PF/C over Max SF/PF . to get others from the list we would have needed to move others . I like D.Allen as a LCD Lock Down Defender at SG or SF , Williams seems to have lost out at PG reserve

We still need a big and a sharp shooter

Agree that we really need another physical guy at the C/PF position . Thought Max was brought in as the 6'8" sharp shooter .? Do not think he is the physical guy at the C/PF . MG-C is supposed to be a very good scorer , some say he could be best player on the team IF healthy .
Sharp shooter : Shrigley , Max , Perez , (if he stays )- ?
Scorer : Kell , Pope , MG-C , JH ?
Believe we are at 11 scholarships , so if we add the PF/C - most important need ? What is the plan for last scholarship , hold it or use it on SG or PG ?

Would Fisher ever look at international players like Mark Few at Gonzaga? Three recruits this year include Rui Hoemimura 6'9 210, Japan, Killian Tillie 6'9 210, France, and Jacob Larsen 6'10 240out of Denmark. They join Karnowski from Poland and Sabonis from the Ukraine via Portland. Id welcome Zach Collins who we recruited and signed an LOI with the Zags, before the international players committed.
Collins also signed before 6'9 John Williams III transferred from Mizzou, it's a crowded house up in Spokane, WA.
