Here's another lefty who fears that our economy is headed into the toilet. He has ideas for fixing the problems (and we surely do have plenty of those). Am I crazy, or do his rather general suggestions all lean in the direction of government control of the economy? We've heard this before. . . back in the '80s when Japan Inc. seemed to be the model to follow. And let's never underestimate the Left's desire to tinker with (oh, hell, I'll just say it outright . . . MANAGE & CONTROL) the U.S. economy. It all boils down to how business decisions are made: will economic considerations or political dogma rule the day? Don't get me wrong. I do think Herbert's piece is worth reading. There is no doubt that we have plenty of problems, and some of the questions he poses are good ones. (Though his idea that we should all start riding buses does not impress me for a number of reasons.) www.nytimes.com/2010/02/06/opinion/06herbert.html?ref=todayspaperAzWm
