Austin Nichols 6'9" 228 lbs. is seeking a transfer from Memphis , where he has played the last two seasons . Last year he averaged 13 points , 6 rebounds , and 3 blocks . Coaches had expected to name him captain and felt he could be first team AAC . Their coaches were totally caught off guard by his intensions and are trying to block any transfer , because it is so late in the recruiting season plus how valuable he is expected to be for their team . Believe he would have to sit 15-16 season but then eligible for two years starting . ( Report by ESPN )

Dutcher can give Jimmy Williams a call on Austin Nichols. Williams originally put the Aztecs on Josh Davis.
And, is he related to the guy that makes "Wild Turkey"; a very fine beverage?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict this will be the next signee to our all-roomer team. I know it's early, but I've got a feeling about this one...

He has to reach out to us first. Then we can talk about it. Otherwise, it's just wishful speaking.

Brodricks Jones just received an offer from Memphis. Let's take this guy off Memphis' hands and call it even . . .

Can Memphis block all transfers ? Force court case ? or what kind of limits can they put on him ?

Can Memphis block all transfers ? Force court case ? or what kind of limits can they put on him ? IIRC, if they do not release him he's blocked from being on scholarship anywhere next season and would have to pay his own way for a year. There may also be a forfeiture of a year of eligibility. But yes, they can fully "block" him if they want. But doing so sets an extremely negative tint on the program that other schools would use in the future to recruit against Memphis. Similar things are often threatened, but the school typically always backs down because they know it's worse for them in the long run. I would expect an agreement where the school releases him... just with a very long list of schools they will block (everyone who originally recruited him out of HS, in-conference teams, anyone on their current future schedules, etc.)

Was there a situation similar with the MBB coach of the Badgers. Reports say Memphis wants Austin Nichols to have a conversation with the coaches . They claim all was good in June ,when they last talked and offered him an opportunity to become a captain .Memphis seems to be another school with revolving door of recruits coming and going . Austin says he told them he wanted to transfer a couple of weeks ago.
Are they also the school last year, that hired a HS coach who has three sons, all good players, that probably will all attend Memphis ?

I would expect an agreement where the school releases him... just with a very long list of schools they will block (everyone who originally recruited him out of HS, in-conference teams, anyone on their current future schedules, etc.) Correct, but do not believe there is any extra forfeiture of eligibility (no more so than typical transfer). He just couldn't get on scholarship anywhere. Believe all the NCAA can govern is scholarship eligibility, and if he's not on scholarship for a year then he'd be free to fly anywhere, like any walk-on.
Doesn't sound like Pastner is going to back down on this one, saying "they talked to him in June and everything was fine". So must be thinking tampering. Pastner has the backing of the AD & school Pres.
I'd guess they might relent eventually, providing a short list of conditional schools at the 24th hour, or maybe release him for 2nd semester. But this late in the game they may not, and will instead force him to either pay is own freight, sit out a year & not attend any university if he can't afford to pay, OR return to Memphis.
Odd situation, especially given he's such an elite talent within the conference. A bench warmer...sure. Released... But the captain of the team...not so fast my friend.

Yes, Ryan blocked Uthoff from transferring to basically anywhere in the B10 or ACC, among others. However, one thing different about that one is that Uthoff asked for his release immediately after the season, before most of the other transfers had settled anywhere and before some of the final recruits had signed. So at least he gave the team a chance, which is why everyone got on Ryan IMO. Ryan over reacted. Ryan must have eventually relented as Uthoff ended up going back home basically - Iowa Mr. Basketball went back to Iowa, a team in the Big 10. : )
Yes, Pastner did hire Lawson, who's kids are big time recruits (4 of them).
Agree, Memphis seems like they have issues as Nichol's entire recruiting class has already transferred except for him.

Ahh, the angry bird packs a punch of triple digits on the proof scale but it is smooth triple digits. Watched this kid play a couple of times on TV and he is very good, was basically carrying the team down the stretch in both games. Sounds like the list of excluded schools will be large if it remains as contenscious as it sounds. Maybe we do have a shot with him, would be a great addition.

So Memphis denied his request, bring in the lawyers. Since FISH and crew will be down south for the Live period perhaps he'll come back with a bigger fish.

No connection to the West Coast or SDSU, but how many Top 25 programs have a scholarship available this late, have playing time available for next year and likley would not be blocked by Memphis?
I would say there is a decent chance, unless there is some personal reason that ties him to his home area.

He's from Tennessee, signed with Memphis, and his short list of schools coming out of high school were all regional schools: Auburn, Duke, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Virginia, and Memphis. Add to the fact that it sounds like his dad is his mouthpiece and I'm thinking it's unlikely that he's going to be allowed to venture that far from home.
He may be a good player, but letting the school know that you're going to transfer...via email? Sounds like a pretty weak move.

If we can bring Josh Davis all the way here, I think there's a chance for Nichols also.

The conditions for the release, according to the local paper Commercial Appeal, includes anyone in the AAC, any Memphis non-conference opponent in 2015-16 and Tennessee, Iowa, Providence and Virginia. Iowa, Providence and Virginia all play in a tournament with Memphis in the 2016-17 season, while Tennessee is … Tennessee. Memphis’ non-conference schedule for 2015-16 includes Oklahoma, South Carolina, Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss and Ohio State.
That's alot of place he can not go. However, the Aztecs would love to have the 5-star 6'9" 225 PF.

I watched their game against Gonzaga, they got blown out but Nichols looked like a player. He was the only Tiger who looked like he belonged on the court with Gonzaga.
