Sorry I recognize real NBA talent. After that game, people on here were touting Wood as a lottery pick. I responded by mentioning that there was no chance he would be drafted higher than Malik, and that (unfortunately), despite his skills, he doesn't have a game that will translate to the NBA. You wanna take a guess where Wood will be in 5, or even 3, years? I've got a few ideas, and they're all thousands of miles away from the NBA. If there was anyway of guaranteeing a follow through of that bet, I would certainly make it. He will be in the NBA. I'm not sure where any "bet" was made, but there's a reason he went undrafted. Take a few minutes looking at the list of NBA players who went undrafted: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Undrafted_National_Basketball_Association_playersThe most accomplished players on that list? Avery Johnson, Bruce Bowen, and Ben Wallace. I'm not saying Wood isn't ever going to amount to something. But let's get one thing clear: the NBA analytics guys/girls know a lot more than you or I. And, as I suggested months ago (and was proven at the NBA combine, as well as Wood's stats against "top" college opponents), his skill set left a lot to be desired in terms of an NBA game. I hope he proves me wrong, if for no other reason than to support the conference. But, if i WERE a betting man, I'd put more George Washington's on Robert Upshaw sticking in the league.

I enjoy everything that is contemporary UNLV basketball, sans wishing their RPI was a bit higher.
Nothing that comes out of Vegas these days fails to amuse everyone not connected to the program. If there was a college bball Mendoza diagonal, Vegas would hop back and forth of that sumbich hourly.

Based on what - his terrific life choices thus far?
I see Upshaw spending a lot of time stopping at the Mini Mart in Bizmarck, ND after a D-league game while either growing a tire around his waist or getting arrested, personally. As for Wood, he has more than enough talent for the NBA. What hurt him had NOTHING to do with his skillset, and everything to do with maturity as noted by Ford in his analysis below.
If he, or Upshaw for that matter, can show they actually have some level of maturity they'll be playing in the NBA. Right now Upshaw has proven he doesn't over 2-3 years; Wood's mistakes spanned a 2-3 months.
Hope they both pull their heads out & make it, but I'd be more likely to put my GW's on Wood's talent over Upshaw's.

June 18 Update: Wood has the talent of a lottery pick. He has great size, athleticism and skill. But as I wrote on Monday, teams seem to be very turned off right now. The feedback from his interviews at the draft combine and in workouts has been disappointing.
May 18 Update: Everyone likes Wood's talent, but he was another player who raised more questions than answers in interviews with teams. Why wasn't he playing? Why wasn't he in better shape? What's he been doing the past month? Lots of questions about maturity are surrounding him right now and as a result, you're seeing him slide just a bit on draft boards.

Based on the fact that he's the best paint-clogging big man coming out this year. Obviously the dude has made terrible choices. But he's as talented, if not more, than Hassan Whiteside.

Yea, but I don't think Whiteside had drug & alcohol addition issues or had to overcome a heart condition. LOTS of major question marks. Many were even questioning if he even likes basketball.
Both players have warts when it comes to their personal choices that's for sure. Wood's seem more about being 19; Upshaw's appear to run much deeper.
Assuming the Lakers don't land a big guy in FA Upshaw may have signed with the right team. I think Wood gets picked up by someone else besides Houston after the summer league, although with lottery-level talent they may not want to let him go.
Wish them both the best - they both have a world of talent.

Yeah, I definitely agree with you - Upshaw has a hell of a lot going on in his life. With some good guidance and hard work, though, he has the ceiling of a Tyson Chandler. I also agree with you that Wood won't stick with Houston. They just have too many bigs, especially at the 3 and 4, to keep him on the roster. I hope he sticks somewhere, but right now I think his defensive (in)ability will keep him off the court, and out of the NBA. Just my two cents.
