www.philsteele.com/It is difficult to be a CFB and Aztec football honk this time of year. I look forward to receiving my Phil Steele's annual mag in the mail in about 10 days. Steele is usually close on evaluating and prognosticating where our team is. I will be surprised if he does not note the upgrades and reassignments on the staff as quite positive. And, I'd be shocked if he does not pick us top dog in the Pacific Division. Does he know how deep we are on defense? Does he still think Jake Fely is our best player? Does he appreciate how good Calvin Munson is? Is he aware how Jeff Horton will be adding new, high percentage passes to our increasing talent at TE and WR? Most importantly, how does he evaluate Maxwell Smith's SEC experience translation to our fortunes? Oh, hurry Mr. (Ms.) Mailperson, deliver my mag soon.

I admit that Phil Steele's magazine is very authoritative. However, when you read the overall outlook for each team, it begins with background material, in detail, going back years. The actual prognostication for the coming season is usually only a sentence or two. That strikes me as being pretty skimpy. The other preview magazines usually give a more well-rounded picture of what a given team is likely to do.
Also, although knowing what a program did in 2009 or 2010 may be interesting, I'm not sure how much that adds to our knowledge of the current state of a particular school's football team. For one thing, in many cases the current head coach was not there in '09 or '10.
Nobody can criticize Steele for not doing his homework, though.

No disrespect to Mr. Steele, but there are a lot of errors in the link I posted above, and I will guess that either it was done by assistants/interns or Steele really doesn't pay much attention to the MWC.
We don't have a Wes Schweitzer on the Aztecs OL and I doubt that Wyoming's C is named RAir Forcee Kiely ... not to mention the questionable call of Max Wittek as 1st team QB

Schweitzer should say San Jose not San Diego, etc. as for QB, Wittek is unproven at Hawaii but most in this league are, and Keaton hasn't proven he can last the season. Not sure who you "rank" 1? These preseason rags fill a void among those just wanting SOMETHING football related, but should be taken with a grain of salt.

I guess it could be assumed he meant to say San Jose, but it could have just as easily been that he meant to put another SDSU OL in there but got the name wrong -- same with the C from WYO, it could have been the AFA C he meant to put in there ... Witteks' numbers aren't outstanding, and I'd have put Keeton in at #1 at this point, because if the ability to stay healthy is an issue, then Fely should not be listed at all That said, I agree that this whole thing should be taken with a grain of salt

2014 = 10-2 2015 = 13-0
Not sure how much of a drop off there is between 1st and 4th, but it can't be severe if Fely is 3rd team and Sanchez is 4th team.
So depth-wise, we have 8 mentions on defense and Boise has 7 mentions, Utah State 6.
Mc Quervo should be happy to see Greene finally getting respect.

Is the offensive line the only big question this season? I think QB, although new, will be better since that isn't hard to do.
Players mentioned in the 4 by Steele 20 BSU 16 SDSU 12 USU 11 CSU 11 Nevada 09 FSU 08 SJSU 06 Hawaii 06 UNM 05 AFA 04 UNLV 04 Wyoming ------------- 112 Total = 28*4.
I keep getting a total of 113 when I should get a total of 112. I found the reason.
3rd team center RAir Forcee Kiely, Wyoming
Update:
First team counts 6 Boise St 5 San Diego St 4 Colorado St 3 Utah St 2 Fresno St 2 Hawaii 2 San Jose St 2 UNLV 1 Nevada 1 Wyoming
2nd Team 4 San Diego St 4 Utah St 3 Air Force 3 Colorado St 3 Fresno St 3 Nevada 3 New Mexico 2 Hawaii 2 San Jose St 1 Boise St
3rd Team 7 Boise St 3 Nevada 3 San Jose St 3 Utah St 2 Colorado St 2 New Mexico 2 San Diego St 2 Wyoming 1 Air Force 1 Boise State 1 Fresno St 1 Hawaii
4th Team Air Force 1 Boise St 5 Colorado St 2 Fresno St 3 Hawaii 1 Nevada 4 New Mexico 1 San Diego St 5 San Jose St 1 UNLV 2 Utah St 2 Wyoming 1

Just like with R Keily - we know there's a playing on Wyoming's team who is R Keily, so pretty safe to assume it's just another typo with someone accidentally pasting "Air Force" in the wrong spot.
The problem is there isn't staff for QC'ing these days in a low income field, so typically just run with what's turned in. Sad, but reality. Also, being quick & being first is more important than being best being more indepth & accurate.
As for Keaton, again, you could pick any of several to fill in that spot. So the question is, do you go with a guy based on 2012 stats or do you with a guy who was probably the highest rated talent of all, but who hasn't taken a snap at his new location? Crapshoot.... In my opinion it'll be the guy who has the better O-line around, more weapons & has the most opportunity to show off his talent.
The good news is there isn't a QB in our conference who's the out & out favorite to excel...

I am not going to deep dive on this topic as you and I both agree that this is really just fodder for the off season ... It is also my opinion that pre-season picks should be players that you think will be the leaders at the end of the season based on those things you identified in your post. I'll also point out that Hawaii had zero OL picked, while naming Wittek 1st team QB -- San Jose St's 2nd team QB is backed up by only one 4th team OL pick etc. As far as targets go, Hawaii had 2 WRs named, Utah St also had 2 named and SJSU only had 1 named. I don't see the balance in these selections that will get those skill players to the top of the conversation at the end of the season and will again assume that not much thought went into these selections.

Interesting all-MWC selections. Only raises one question for me. Did Christian Heyward give up football and I missed the announcement?

I am going with the idea he uses a dart board for the non-P5 conferences ... I have reserved the beer pong method for how Buddy Black chooses the Padres batting order

I understand part of his reason (injuries) for not putting Keaton as the No. 1 returning QB, but putting him on 3rd team? That to me is a surprise! And, what happens if he stays healthy the whole season and leads Utah St. to the Championship game? When he is healthy, and playing he is a very dangerous QB. If, he plays against us look out.
One really sad commentary on these All MW teams is you look at the first four teams (offense) at the WR, and see absolutely no Aztecs! The past few years since 2010 when we had Sampson & Brown, and Aztec football has not had any great WR's. This is a school where we use to pump out at least one or more on a yearly basis. We were known as Wide Receiver U. It has been slim pickins lately. Hope that improves this season.
Also notice that Fely is on the MW third team(defense), probably due to injury.

I've gotten two of the other publications and they both pick us first in the Pacific. Would be nice if we could finally beat Fresno State. Can we beat USD or will it be a repeat of UNLV in 1996 (that was the year we easily beat Oklahoma, wasn't it?)?
