Coach Dutcher was on 1090 today . 8 guys are already attending First Session of Summer school . Can practice a couple of hours with the coaches . PG, JH will be here for the second session that starts in July . Dutcher feels JH has a lot of great experience as a PG in HS. BJ , is a big, who could benefit from some work in the weight room ,going from a HS big with not that much competition, to college BB where the physical part of game is really different and can take a while to get used to. Red shirting of Zylan last year will be beneficial this year for him and the team.Coach says the coaches and players are really looking forward to the Petco Park game 12/5 . Staff feels the 30 second shot clock will be very favorable change for the Aztecs .would also be helpful if the officials call the game a lot closer . Felt Winston made a very intelligent choice coming back to play for the Aztecs and the staff was very thankful he did .

By many accounts Brodricks Jones is a project. I see a redshirt in his future.
Zylan is an intriguing one. Freakish athleticism, but not sure what to expect.
JH as the PG? That means junior D'Erryl will continue his role as a capable backup. I like D'Erryl and I'm fine with that.
Agree Winston made the smart choice. A consistent jumper would move him to man-crush status.

I just think Winston saw MP getting all the glitter and decided to cash in on a great talent pool

Dutcher sounded very excited about the Petco game , he hopes Aztec fans do also and support the team there . Game is a neutral site game , so could be a Fox Sports game on TV with additional money going to both teams . Coach has watched JH a lot in HS , sees him as a great distributor of the basketball . But will see even more of him second summer session .
BJ , when you are a 6 '9" player in HS you do not always get good competition every game , so it takes a transition to get used to the more physical play in college , where the other team can have taller , stronger and more experienced guys . BJ's team was not that disciplined , Metu ( also 6'9" going to USC) was the star player . So BJ will work on his skills and building up his strength . IMO with Spencer, Shepard, Chol, Pope , Zylan and Allen all coming back at the 5,4,3 positions maybe difficult for BJ to get a lot of PT . So there could be a decision what is better to play on the Active squad - with not much PT or Red Shirt . He could talk with Zylan . IMO, also believe you can start out as red shirt , then at any time they can pull red shirt and move him to active squad if they need him . Coaches and BJ will make that decision when the time comes .
Dutcher thought with the Aztec's strong defense . Likes the improved rule on the 10 second back court situation. Moving to the 30 second shot clock . Could only help the team . He also felt there is a message being sent to the refs to get a better control of the game not allow as much of the physical play, need to enforce rules . Widen the arc in the lane. Plus look for more fouls called on guys trying to hold other players . He expects Winston to continue to get better and have a banner year . Very excited about the team.

I know for sure that Allen, Cheatham, Pope, Shrigs, Spencer, Shepard and Kell are there (from Twitter/Instagram/direct conversations). I would guess Chol is the 8th because he is from San Diego (don't know for sure). That would leave just D'erryl and the incoming freshman and Hoetzel as the only scholarship players not there. I believe the number 8 that was mentioned was only referring to scholarship players.

If you were a casual follower of our basketball team, you would need a secret decoder ring to follow this thread with all the abbreviations. I am a hard core fan and I had to keep translating.

Helmsley is the real deal at PG . Played the position in HS and All Star games . Even as a freshman he is far better then Kell ,who really needs to spend the time at SG to get back his scoring . Kell was not a PG in HS and was below average at that PG last year, he would still be learning that position and we need the SG position to score a consistent 15 points per game . So let him just focus on that. Williams could be an option , so let Helmsley and Williams go at it from day 1 . JH will be there for the second summer school . If JH was not brought in to start Zabo would not have left .

Hemsley will most likely start IMO, but he's not going to be handed the job and see Kell still getting plenty of minutes at the position as well.

FRESHMAN point guards are going to make mistakes...but perhaps if he starts early he can learn on the job early.
