I don't think anyone is expanding at this time.
Better chance to create a new conference. So from the schools referenced "UCF, Cincy, BYU, Boise State, SDSU, Colorado State and maybe Memphis", add UNLV and 2 more. This would allow for a conference championship game and a new TV contract. Perhaps not. But we are expounding, volubly, yes?

First of all, IMO, it was a mistake for the BIG XII not to add Louisville when they could. They also made a mistake by adding West Virginia; IMO. They really should have just added BYU; even with all their baggage. It would be interesting to see what the distances from SDSU to all the BIG XII schools are and compare them to what WVU and BYU are... just for fun. If & when the BIG XII expands the candidates are probably UCF, Cincy, BYU, Boise State, SDSU, Colorado State and maybe Memphis. I can't imagine Houston would get a look since Texas is pretty saturated; but who knows. Any others? First of all, this is the offseason. So, take the post with a grain of salt to talk about something other than a Charger stadium. Will the BIG XII expand? Who knows but we can still talk about potential expansion candidates. I like the notion of travel time vs. travel distance so maybe someone can do that. Here is the travel distances (air miles) for West Virginia University and San Diego State University to BIG XII schools... WVU to ISU = 746; SDSU to ISU = 1464 WVU to KSU = 891; SDSU to KSU = 1251 WVU to KU = 828; SDSU to KU = 1305 WVU to OSU = 959; SDSU to OSU = 1182 WVU to OU = 1002; SDSU to OU = 1153 WVU to TTU = 1289; SDSU to TTU = 894 WVU to TCU = 1088; SDSU to TCU = 1160 WVU to BAYLOR = 1179; SDSU to BAYLOR = 1153 WVU to TEXAS = 1185; SDSU to TEXAS = 1157 WVU average distance to BIG XII schools = 1019 SDSU average distance to BIG XII schools = 1191 Dude, who cares about WVU? The big question was what was the distances compared to BYU and BYU's average distance is 1,187 so SDSU is closer on average. As far as attendance for SDSU, here are the Top 5 seasons... 1992 - 46,766 - The team went 5-5-1 and had home games vs USC, UTEP, Air Force, Hawaii, Fresno State and Miami. It also happened to have had a Heisman contender. 1975 - 42,040 - The team went 8-3 and had home games vs UTEP, North Texas, CSUF, NMSU, Arizona and CSULB. 1969 - 41,139 - The team went 11-0 and had home games vs CSULA, UCSB, Pacific, NMSU, North Texas and CSULB. 1979 - 39,978 - The team went 8-3 and had home games vs Wisconsin, Miami, Wyoming, Arizona, UTEP, BYU. 2011 - 39,865 - The team went 8-5 and had home games vs Cal Poly, Washington State, TCU, Wyoming, New Mexico, Boise State and Fresno State. They have already averaged 46K with a 5-5 team. Why? Because they had an exciting offense and had Marshall Faulk on the team, not to mention a HC that generating excitement by saying things like "We are going to be the Miami of the West." San Diego is kind of like LA. You have to win AND be entertaining. This is the school where Air Coryell started. They need to go uptempo spread and get some offense and keep winning. They just had 40K in 2011 by just having a winning record. So if they could combine winning with excitement they could go over 50K.

BYU, if you like it or not, is a better addition right now than SDSU. However, I believe SDSU has more potential than BYU (doesn't mean SDSU wouldn't be a great travel partner with BYU). The reason I compared SDSU vs. WVU is because the BIG XII saw enough upside to add the Mountaineers. Why? I have no idea. They have had some success in football & basketball and have good attendance and ok academics (US news #168; SDSU is #149). Other than that I don't know why they added them. No great recruiting, not a destination city, small DMA, not great weather, not regional to the rest of the BIG XII and not easy to travel to (no major airport). SDSU trumps WVU in about every category. We just need to keep winning (and win BIG in football), create a better game day atmosphere and get more local support (attendance). Consequently, when SDSU builds its own college stadium it will help immensely with all of these issues.

Morgantown is only 70+ miles from Pittsburgh, the #22 TV market in the nation, and is an area that's extremely strong in recruiting. Plus, it opens up the east coast in general, providing significantly more exposure to their conference in an area they previously had no representation. The population base is growing in the east; it's in neutral if not decline in the Midwest/central region.
They added WVU for the same reason SDSU is a strong contender - TV eyeballs, recruiting base & extending the reach to a very populated area of the country.
They can sing a nice tune when it comes to academics, tradition, etc., but ultimately when you NEED to expand as a conference the only people that matter are those sitting in Bristol, Connecticut and at the FOX corporate offices.

So are you inferring that SDSU can lay claim to Orange County and LA TV markets? To an extent I suppose that is true but we mainly own the San Diego County DMA. I would think Pitt owns the Pittsburgh market and they suck even though they are in the ACC. If Pittsburgh is so great it sure doesn't seem to help the Panthers. They do share a pro stadium with the Steelers so that is a big negative just as it is for the Aztecs. IMO SDSU is superior in almost every category when compared to WVU. However, as I have said, they have had some football/basketball success and have good attendance. They also have a great game day environment with their own stadium; something both SDSU and Pitt don't have. I do agree that the talking heads in Bristol made the final decision.

They also have a great game day environment with their own stadium; something both SDSU and Pitt don't have. I do agree that the talking heads in Bristol made the final decision. Since USC & UCLA are not moving to the B12, yes. We have the highest share within the SD market, which ranks 28th nationally & presents a great opportunity to the B12. We give the B12 reach into California, adding eyeballs (more so than almost every other candidate) & thus added exposure for recruiting purposes.
WVU did the same thing. It's in a large market, and close to several major metro areas (Cleveland, DC both within 200 miles, etc.). It's extremely well positioned for the B12 to expand their reach, and made sense. I haven't seen the ratings/share for WVU vs. Pitt within that DMA, but would expect them to be relatively similar. Plus, not sure if B12 preferred WVU over Pitt & Pitt was less interested, or what? But WVU makes sense (other than current travel).
TV money drives expansion, not the gap between going to the Poinsettia bowl & a major bowl. The conferences get the hurdles B5 teams face in getting to & winning big bowl games, or even competing with P5 teams in this area. It definitely doesn't hurt to do well in the field (which we have), or even being even more successful head to head.
But TV/media & reach are the critical factors. I wouldn't say SDSU is "superior" to WVU by any means, but when compared to most future options we're at or near the top of the list in most of the key criteria.

Great graphics and mileage chart . But bottom line . As BYU and other G5 schools pray , dream , hope , come up with various stats and schemes . Unless the TV Networks come up with at least another 25 to 50 million per team added the B12 is not going to expand . the TV networks have a contract with the B12 for a few years , so unless they say they will pay more MONEY . Expansion is very unlikely to happen . Easier and more profitable is to work on an 8 team playoff .

And it would certainly NOT create the enthusiasm necessary to ignite the funding of a new on-campus stadium. Sad, but true.

Winning the MWC Championship is not the only goal for Rocky. Stop acting like it is, if you want to What other goals has he stated? You mean besides saying we want to play in a BCS bowl and/or there's no reason we can't do what Boise just did? I know I've heard him say each multiple times.
None of that happens without winning the division first and getting to the title game.
I take it you're not a fan of the 100's of coaches who use the line "you can only win 1 game at a time and we only worry about this Saturday" are you? Apparently they're too short sighted.

Winning the MWC is so minimalist that it's truly embarrassing. If you're fine with that, so be it. For me, the goal should be the top-25 or higher. Period. Sterk said it, but without any believable conviction or action.

Truly, I get nauseous at that line of "One game at a time". My opinion is that most of them say it, in the same breath that--for example--Saban would say, "We've really got to fight to beat SDSU. That Rocky Long is a super coach."

You definitely bring the nauseousness, at least I get it reading your negative comments -- every coach I know, including Fisher, Martinez and Long have the same goals 1. win every game on the schedule 2. win the conference 3. make it to the post season and win it all If you can do #1, the rest are taken care of, if you don't win every game, then your next goal is to win the conference / tourney championship -- doing those things will get you into the post season, where it's win or go home. Since most coaches agree that going undefeated is indeed a lofty goal, when asked even Coach Fisher says that the #1 goal is to win the conference. Coach Martinez and Coach Long say the same thing too, but for some reason, that's not good enough for you.

So again, just my opinion. You and I certainly disagree on what is truly sad ... as I think your brand of "fandom" is caustic and unproductive. Where others see improvement and momentum, you see failure and regression. While the leadership of this university, athletic department and it's many coaches have brought about an unparalleled level of success, you see nothing but disappointment -- now that is SAD. Nobody is saying they are satisfied with where we are, but are rejoicing in where we've come from and can actually see the path forward. Considering where we were just a decade ago, where we are now is a really nice place to be ... and if things keep improving the way they have for SDSU & the Aztecs, a decade from now could be a really great place. When we get there, you'll probably still be cursing the leadership that got us there and complaining about something -- that's just who you are.
