I love that this article points out that Kawhi has always worked hard to improve his game. His success isn't merely a function of the Spurs player development program but really a result of his individual work ethic and drive. Certainly the Spurs' focus on player development has helped him. However, he and he alone is responsible for his development.

Great find, thank you so much for posting that link. I have always been a huge Kawhi guy, but what he is doing in the NBA at Age 23 is way beyond what I even hoped or dreamed. And how he conducts himself while achieving huge success is 100% class. Great to read Coach Fisher's comments, I agree with him 100% and am so proud of Kawhi. What a great representative of SDSU he is, keep it going Kawhi!

I laugh at the common narrative that paints Kawhi as a shy humble kid who does things the "right way." I've never viewed Kawhi in this way. There is no humility in the way that he attacks his opponents. His confidence and drive are in no way a function of an "aw shucks" persona. This young man is as confident and driven as any superstar. He doesn't behave in the same way as other talented people because he gives zero f****s about anything accept improving his game and helping his team win. He is too laser focused on his team, his game, and his opponent's tendencies to yuk it up on the bench or pose after a dunk. This kid is more junk yard dog with a bone than he is the Mother Teresa of the hardwood.

It's not like you can hear players talk above the crowd noise. Maybe he doesn't trash talk as much as others, but I would doubt he's the "silent" assassin that many think he is.

Aside from a few incidents (Jimmer) Kawhi rarely even talks on the court at all. After they met in the playoffs the first time Wade commented: “I still don’t know what Kawhi Leonard sounds like. He a silent assassin.” Rarely even talks to his teammates. I watched him at SDSU and have followed him with the Spurs and he's just a quiet individual. Not necessarily shy or anything just not verbose.

Nice article - anyone know why he trains at UCSD instead of SDSU in the offseason? (or if its eve true) . I know there have been sightings at Viejas and I would think once the Jam Center is open he would get the first key.
Then again Shak & MJ could play two on two vs. Barkley & Kobe and nobody on that campus would notice

Good article.....great find ran. Kawhi's work ethic has always been unbelievable. We can only hope that his emergence on the national stage, articles like this, Coach Fisher and his staff's reputations, the JAM Center, and, oh yes, the Show and capacity crowds at Viejas will attract a host of similar hard workers who want to be great. Proud to be an Aztec.

I agree, once the JAM Center opens on August, Fish needs to get him there instead if at all possible.

Both got technicals in the game. Jamaal's is probably more memorable because of how it happened. Kawhi's was more costly because he was forced to sit early with foul trouble.

In the worst call in Aztec history, the tech was called on Kawhi at the beginning of the game for "Talking". A second cheap foul was called be the same ref a little later, and Kawhi sat most of the first half. In the second half, a non foul was called an offensive foul and Kawhi's game suffered. You could see Kawhi pacing behind the bench, he could not even sit down. Everybody remembers Kimba's flop, but it should not have mattered.
A ref from the previous game came to the group and told them he had a problem with Kawhi and to watch him. Really?

Seems like a lot of NBA players are also having "problems" with Kawhi. LeBron, etc...

Also seems to talk to Patty Mills a little when on the court together and there's a stop in play. Still, he's pretty much a baller, not a talker.

Not a show boater or trash talker. He'll put down a top 10 dunk and jog back immediately on defense. Even fans of teams he's dominated have nothing but praise for him.

Not only a future great but someone so matching in temperament to Kawhi.
