Your are engaging in circumlocution. Contracts are contracts, no matter how many years in advance. You either reduce them to writing, or you don't. How many "years" did Sterk allow these to "contracts" to hover, or dangle, without written memorialization? You're really looking silly. Well at least you can find humor in this sad state we find State.

^ ^ Further confirmation that Sterk really effed up. ^ ^ As to the tuneup angle, it should serve that purpose but as aztech said, there sure better not be any starters in past halftime. Actually, if our linemen play halfway decently, the starters should all be out of the game considerably before then. Edit: Oh and if the allegedly big announcement about a home and home is that we're going to play Utah, pimping that as a BFD will be further embarrassment to our alma mater. Why? It's a very reputable and good P5/Pac 12 school. You're just proving that some of our fans will ALWAYS find a reason to bitch, whine and moan, and will never been happy. You're telling me that you would be excited by hearing we're going to have a home and home with UTAH? Really? I can just hear the presser now . . . Jim Sterk (following a drum roll): "I am very, very pleased to announce that we've signed a contract with the University of Utah to play a home and home series with the very reputable Utes." Sterk pauses expecting to hear hoots of joy but instead hears someone say, "That's nice, Jim, now tell us the BIG announcement." Sterk: "Uh, that was it."

As would be expected, your nothing but someone who has a bunch of questions with no answers. Not surprising. First of all, it's John David Wicker who's in charge of football scheduling.
Second, it's not an "excuse". We've been hearing about the scheduling issues and back-outs since November/December, when we were first starting to finalize match-ups.
No, they didn't happen simultaneously. Although I'm sure they were reaching out to multiple potential partners, they had 1 known VERBAL agreement in place and they decided not to sign, and then another which required a LONG TIME of schedule revisions through the MAC and MWC, only to actually have all properly negotiated terms in place. Then, and ONLY THEN, did they change their mind.
As anyone should know, written contracts are not submitted until the terms are verbally agreed upon. Otherwise, you're wasting a lot of time going back & forth with written changes. Verbal negotiations can go on for weeks/months and then, and only then is the contract submitted for signature. THEY BACKED OUT OF THE AGREEMENT.
Now, if you're still going to play dumb (if it's playing) then there's really nothing else I can do to help you. You're apparently playing the role of ostrich & have your head so deep... We actually get it. We don't need to dig.
Repeating yourself does not add credibility or strength of your argument. Your "answers" raise even more questions: When did this "negotiation" begin? Two years ago? Three months ago? Repeating myself is only because some people are too dense to comprehend the first time.
No, it doesn't raise more questions. BTW, the most recent case happened JUST RECENTLY!
How about why not actually supporting SDSU athletics, get involved with the Aztec Club, go to luncheons like today where JDW spent a lot of time talking about the scheduling process and issues that led us to where we are today. In other words, GET INFORMED rather than being a whiny person on a message board. And if you can't make it to the luncheons, send an email with actual, educated questions to John David or even Jim.
Personally, I don't worry about specific timelines because I know this has been a nonstop point of emphasis since the Navy and SJSU game were eliminated. If you feel the need to know every team we reached out to, which dates we reached out to them, when we started negotiating with those who were a viable solution, etc., go for it. But all you're doing is wasting people's time.
Or you can keep bitching, whining & coming up with random, uneducated questions and instigating arguments on this board when you don't have anything to actually say.
Your call.

Exactly. Its a tune up which is what we need. I don't see why everyone is so upset that we are playing a IAA team. All I want is a tune up game. It will be a tune up alright, for our bench players. If the starters are still in there at half time, this team is in trouble. That's how much of a mismatch this game is supposed to be. So who should they of played??? Warm up games are games you put on the schedule to get the starters some playing time vs somebody different then who you have been matching up with all summer. There's nothing wrong with adding to the teams confidence before you take on Cal. I don't see the problem here

We have played Utah before - when they were in the MWC - they didn't fill the stadium back then, either.
Same old, same old.
No, Utah is really not the "quality" home opponent most fans think of when they think of "quality" - regardless of how you spin it.

It's quite evident that you have no idea how football scheduling works and all the back-and-forth negotiations that goes behind the scene. Furthermore, it's obvious that any explanation that sdcoug provides will not meet your satisfaction because you'll find any reason to dispute it. Do you even know how negotiation works albeit it verbal or written?

Questions beg more questions. If the "verbal" agreement just recently blew up, what happened to the prior one? And evidently that one was never reduced to writing either. Was that one in the verbal column for weeks? Months? Years? I mean if we're blaming the Big East mess for this then we should have been getting this open date with a written commitment as soon as we knew Thompson and Boise were screwing us. Did we just wet ourselves and hide under the desk for months?

So what you're saying is if State hadn't fallen to the charms of that 'ole snake oil salesman I wouldn't be looking at my long held refrigerator magnet of the 1995 football schedule to be reminded of what once was and what is nothing more than a sad reminder of what has been since. 95'? Tell me how that schedule is much different than what we have most years? If not for Utah moving up to the PAC that would've only had 2 P5's on it...seems pretty typical to me. uh...here was the schedule in 1995 GAME RESULTS Date Team Score Attendance Notes 9/2/1995 California W 33-9 9/9/1995 @ Oklahoma L 22-38 9/16/1995 @ Brigham Young L 19-31 9/28/1995 Nevada W 30-27 10/7/1995 @ Utah W 24-21 10/14/1995 Fresno State W 48-24 10/21/1995 San Jose State W 49-20 10/28/1995 @ Texas-El Paso W 45-16 11/4/1995 New Mexico W 38-29 11/11/1995 Wyoming L 31-34 11/18/1995 @ Hawaii W 49-10 11/25/1995 Colorado State L 13-24

Utah is certainly not TCU -- even though both are former MWC programs & both were ranked this year, but we're talking about 2023 a decade after both programs left the MWC

Cheap? It's a Home & Home, which is what we'd want with ANY P5 school. If fans can't get excited about a quality P12 school coming to our stadium year in & year out then our FANS will never be happy & we have no reason to think joining a P5 conference will do anything to change their mind (or increase attendance).
Sounds to me people are just looking to complain & be dissatisfied. Pretty sad actually.
Not saying that's who JD has in place, but if we did add Utah to the mix at some point that'd be a great get, as would Colorado, UW, Oregon, Stanford or USC. We already have @asu in 2017, so a home game with Utah or any of those teams would round out the schedule very well. With Cal, ASU, UCLA & Arizona in the mix, and OSU completed I think the ideal would be to get all 12 on the calendar at some point over a decade or so of football.

This balances our OOC. One FCS, one decent FBS, one winnable P5, one highly likely P5 loss.
Am I missing something here?

Well, at first you pretended to be the pedagogue on this issue, but actually transmogrified quickly into more of a demagogue. The questions left unanswered speak sharply to why we are where are, and why.
