Just something to think about until next season starts Now that my wounds are fully licked, I'll reserve judgment on this new lineup until then. After re-watching the travesty of Duke in Charlotte (yes, as a LOSER), I can now more confidently rant there should be no doubt about the existence of 8 on 5 basketball in college, and perhaps life in general. NC State pretty much got the same raw deal, and it still sucks, but to borrow a phrase, "Forget it, Jake . . . it's NCAA basketball." See you next year, Aztec fans.

Sounds like my favorite brokerage firm: Dewey, Cheatham & Howe I thought they were attorneys. In actuality...they were the attorneys of The 3 Stooges...at least that was my recollection...

Some of you are getting me ready for a run at the Final Four and others are busting the bubble and letting me think we won't even make the NIT. Spenser need to develop a little more on offense and shoot some free throws. Pope needs to act like he is not lost on defense. Z is still a mystery. If I were to guess now it would be just that. We should be better next year than this, but it is just my guess. I had hopes for the Emerald Eight so you can see how clearly I see the future.

Probably not. Kawhi/Billy/Malcolm all played together at the height of their college careers. Zylan is going to be playing his first season of college basketball while Spencer will play his last. Could they be individually better? Maybe, but I don't think those 3 next year will be better than the forwards of '10/'11. I think some of us have forgotten how good that team was. I was thinking of the 10-11 team today. That team was awesome. That UCONN loss is still painful. If we didn't have T's called on us we probably would of won and maybe won it all that year (assuming we got past AZ). We would of beaten UK and Butler easy in the Final 4. Ugh. Hurts even more when you remember the year before SDSU crushed UofA with basically the same squads. the further out we get, the more certain I become about SDSU's chance that year. So no, this trio is not going to be as good as the 2010/11 front court.

We had the X-man. Now, with the Freak and the Beast, we're apparently loading up with X-Men.
Between those two and arguably the best rim protector in program history, let's see where these kids (along with Shep, Shrigs, & Co.) can take us. A year from now we may very well be re-addressing this same question.

I had high hopes of Elite Eight also but the injury to Polee, the inconsistency of Shepard, and no point guard prevented the team from reaching it. I have the same high hopes next season and believe we will be in an even better position.

If I were to compare the 2010 team vs 2016 team strictly on potential, I would side with next years team. Malik Pope has the kind of potential that I've never seen before at SDSU(im 29 if that means anything). As great as Kawhi Leonard was, he wasn't that great offensively. No where near the level of offensive talent Malik Pope has. Although Kawhi Leonard is a much better perimeter defender, I believe Malik will improve in this area next year. Should be able to move better on that leg now that he knows he can play on it.
Malcolm Thomas was/is better in the post offensively then Skylar Spencer. Not much of a debate there.
This is the wild card since we have absolutely no idea what Zylan can offer to the team offensively. Now the same can be said about Billy White because of his inconsistent play. Some games he looked unstoppable while other games I would forget he was on the court.
The reason why I would the choose the potential of next years team compared to that 2011 team is because of the backcourt. I believe Winston Shepard and Jeremy Hemsley are just better overall players then DJ Gay and Chase Tapley.
It's great to have potential but it means nothing if you don't live up to it so hopefully everybody can stay healthy next year and play up to their talent level.

I just don't see the fierce rebounding coming from those 3 next year, even though they should be cleaning up on the boards given their size. We don't have the bully mentality on the boards like we did with Kawhi, Billy and Malcolm...and even, Josh Davis. At least Shep was trying to be that guy in spurts this year. I would love to see how Fish will make it work with Sky, Pope, Z and WSIII all on the court at the same time.

I thought they were attorneys. In actuality...they were the attorneys of The 3 Stooges...at least that was my recollection... Actually that was the names the Three Stooges used in one of their comedy shorts where they played attorneys. Great names for them. You can buy shirts with those names, and the Stooges faces on them from Three Stooges.com.

I often remember the words used to describe the Aztecs by the AZ coach when the 2010 team drubbed his Cats: Bigger, faster, stronger, tougher, meaner...
These are also the attributes the 2016 team will need if they are going anywhere in MM.

Pope is flashier than Kawhi was. No way in hell Pope is better though. The guy absolutely shut people down AND averaged like 15pts & 10 boards his sophomore year, plus had plenty of steals and could handle the rock better than Pope... Pope has a really high loose dribble and when he drives he gets stripped more often than not. He has a lot to work on. Kawhi never made a mistake either
