During Vietnam, conservatives generally supported the war and left-wingers generally opposed it. At least that was true after the first year or two of the conflict. The same was largely true of Iraq. In the case of Afghanistan, it's not so simple. By now, I'm not really sure if any large political or demographic group is enthusiastic about our Afghan campaign. Yet, the President is in favor of it. Sort of. To a certain extent. Kinda. There is good reason to believe that Barack Obama is not in the slightest interested in winning in Afghanistan, however one might wish to define the term "winning." On the contrary, there is reason to believe that Obama continues to support the war only because he thinks that a rapid withdrawal would hurt him politically. So we linger on, perhaps pointlessly, because the President is more motivated by political rather than national security considerations. And what about conservatives, the ones who supported the Iraq war and whose elders probably supported the war in Vietnam? Seems that more and more of those are skeptical. Here's a good description of why such skepticism is warranted. spectator.org/archives/2010/10/18/obamas-warAzWm
