i'm sure the two dozen folks that still get the newspaper will have a big reaction. I still get the paper (in addition to using the online site(s)) because there's something about the tactile experience I enjoy reading the Sports page over breakfast. Yep. You and 23 others.

Probably an opinion piece about folding SDSU football and turning the Qualcomm site into a illegal immigrant holding facility. Or something along those lines that will elicit strong reactions. You sure it's big enough?

www.utsandiego.com/news/2015/mar/06/new-stadium-would-serve-more-than-just-the/From the warning that I got from Aztec William I thought I was going to have to go all Dan Aykroyd on him as if he were Jane Curtin, but then I read the op-ed piece and found it to be fairly measured and reasonable coming from someone with such a pro-SDSU and anti-Chargers bias. I still have some issues with some of it, but it is what it is...

Nice job William, it's not everyone who has he guts to put themselves out there regardless of whether you agree with the opinion or not.

If nothing else, this event has proven that almost anybody can get a piece in the local newspaper!
It might be of interest (perhaps only slightly so) to report that the UT actually printed my piece almost as written. A few details were left out, but the main idea comes across, I think. One thing that was removed was my view that the needs of the university, meaning academically related, should come first. They took out my suggestion that perhaps a new "Chargers" stadium is simply too big a mouthful (economically) for this region to swallow. I also added the thought that the Spanoses might be better served to sell the team or move to another area (i.e., one populous enough to produce sufficient numbers of people with the interest and the money to attend costly NFL games). After all, this has always been, and seemingly always will be, a small market town.
Finally, I'm not crazy about the title, but since they actually printed the piece, and without too many changes, it would be unseemly for me to complain.

PS: Based on recent items in the UT, the argument seems to be swinging towards the concept of building a new NFL type stadium in the valley. If such a stadium is built there, any chance that SDSU could build a West Campus would be gone forever. That's what bothers me. The vision of a new stadium, admittedly much nicer than the Q, but still too big and expensive for the Aztecs (i.e., higher rental fees and no control over parking and concession revenue) is worrisome. That reality would simply verify the fear that public money used to help a private, for-profit firm build its desired venue is still SOP.

If the Chargers leave I agree 100 %. If they stay they could still help by partially funding a Stadium large enough to serve an NFL team with the ability to convert easily for a more appropriate College experience.I strongly believe that even if a Chargers/Aztecs joint stadium is built on The Qualcomm Site SDSU academic/Housing expansion should occur there as well.

How can a stadium be "too big" for the Aztecs? Because they are content to languish in the Mountain Goat Conference that nobody west of Salt Lake City gives a $#!+ about. Don't be trying to run the Chargers out of town. In San Diego, Chargers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Aztecs, and its mostly the Aztecs' fault.

Don't be trying to run the Chargers out of town. In San Diego, Chargers >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Aztecs, and it's mostly the Aztecs' fault. So by your logic ... the Chargers are small time in not asking for a 100,000 seat stadium? I mean Michigan has one. Surely the Chargers are big time compared to Michigan. In fact, the top 15 stadiums by capacity are all FBS stadiums ... The first NFL Stadium (Met Life Stadium) checks in at #16 (82,566) The Chargers want a 70,000 seat stadium ... doesn't that make them small time in comparison? I guess an 80,000 seat stadium would be "too big" for the Chargers. For Comparison: Lambeau Field (Packers) -- 80,735 AT&T Stadium (Cowboys) -- 80,000 (expandable to 105,000 with standing room) Arrowhead Stadium (Chiefs) -- 76,416 (used to be 79,451 before downsizing during a $375 million renovation completed in 2010) Then there's University of Phoenix Stadium (Cardinals) that just hosted a Super Bowl -- 63,400 expandable to 72,200 (78,600 standing room) Perhaps the Chargers, who have trouble filling Qualcomm Stadium (70,561), should look at a reduction themselves (just a thought) The average capacity for FBS Stadiums is around 50K (Rutgers, Maryland, Baylor, Minnesota, Kansas, Kansas St., ECU, Stanford, Syracuse, Northwestern, Oregon State, Utah, TCU)

I considered telling them that I was given the Man of Distinction Award for Foreign Language Study at Fullerton Junior College in 1962, but figured that mentioning AztecMesa might just be a better idea. AW I am 100% with you and also believe this is the plan that is going to happen. If we share a 45000 seat stadium with an MLS team even better. And as I have said, the B12 in 2016 plan is going to happen. All is good.

That reality would simply verify the fear that public money used to help a private, for-profit firm build its desired venue is still SOP. It's funny how the transplant Chargers haters try to paint the Spanos Family as these evil capitalist who are out to get richer by screwing the public out of their money, but suggest using state money to expand a University while student loan debt is at an all-time high. Sure the Spanos are only concerned about making their business more profitable (as they should be), but let's not act like SDSU would use this "West Campus" to provide free education. They're goal is to make money just like the Chargers. So if you're going to villianize the Spanos for trying to grow their family empire, then do the same to all the state politicians, banks, creditors, loaners, and everyone else who would benefit from a University expansion project.
