He made two three's last night in addition to making a great pass on the fast break to give us the lead with about 90 seconds left. He also made some key boards. He's never, ever been a scorer for anyone at any level before coming here. We should stop expecting him to transform into one here. He's an elite defender who can rebound. Nail on the head. He's never been a volume scorer. Not in HS and not here at State. Although i will say this... X Thames was not the X Thames we saw at his Senior season. AND he was a redshirt Senior at that. Shepard came into SDSU as the highest recruit we had thus far, and with that came a ton of expectations. I too still expect a lot more from him. But even more so than X Thames, Shepard has greater physical gifts and upside. The part that is missing is the mentality. And THAT didnt finally click on all cylinders with X until he was a senior. I am hoping that Winston will assert himself much more as a driver/finisher come tourney time... but that is highly unlikely. But i CAN see he him take a very big jump of improvement his senior year if he truly sits down this off season and continues to attack his weaknesses in his game. He is already a much improved jump shooter and that will only increase next year. If he can practice finishing strong and with another year of muscle on his frame, his senior year might be a real nice way to finish his career here at SDSU.

And yet, he's the top scorer for the team this season.

He missed some shots that he should have made, with the ones late coming off of very smart cuts to the basket when JJ was double teamed. I don't think that's lack of confidence or anything, sometimes you just miss. Overall he played a good game on both sides of the court.

He's killing it on the D-end, as are all of them. I won't pretend to know what our O concept is, so I won't comment on what he should or shouldn't do when we're looking to fill the bucket. But I do know how to shoot FTs, and would leave any of the Aztec scholarship players behind in the dust in a contest. So I feel pretty comfortable saying Shep's gotta cut down his time getting set up to shoot a free throw in half. Guys lining up 30 footers to win The Masters at Augusta don't take that much time. Open-heart surgeons don't take that much time bypassing clogged arteries. Toes on the line. Shoulders squared. Deep breath. Aim dead center just over the lip of the rim. Let it go with a Ducks Head release. Payday. Shouldn't take more than 5 seconds. It's a free throw, not a scientific study. Winston does the same thing on every free throw. Spin the ball, take one bounce, and up and through. Taking a second to take a deep breath and calm yourself before a big free throw is a good thing. Have you ever attempted a free throw as important as the one(s) Winston nailed last night? Yep, and as any shooting coach will tell you one of the most important things is to have a routine & stick to it every time. Whether it's fast or slow is irrelevant.

Shepard got fouled on that last one and then got called himself on a very tick-tack rebounding foul. I was hoping he wouldn't get a "T" when he talked to the ref about it.

Yea, I thought it was a foul too, and I'm sure he was frustrated about missing. Glad he got the final three and the free throws at the end.

What I'm saying us not only can he nail those game-winners you referred to -- but also make half of all those he missed earlier in any given game so he doesn't find himself on the crap end of missing those game-winners.

Pretty sure that's what Shep said when he walked over to the ref... "HOW DID YOU NOT HEAR THAT?!"

When you take that long, you're overthinking that which is simple. You sure about that? Some people take longer to calm their mind than others; some people have slower routines than others. It would be interesting, however, to see just how close Shepard gets to having the ball for 10 seconds before he shoots.

I love this board.

Shep was a critical ingredient for the win. I enjoyed the assist to Kell, the open three-point bucket, and I really enjoyed the game winning rebound when Vegas intentionally missed their free throw.
I hated the too many missed bunnies and missed dunks, and was particularly annoyed with Chol's fumbles.
Skylar was a rock, and not enough good things have been said about Allen's performance.
The post game consensus was this game wasn't about X's and O's. It was about guts; competing like crazy and finding a way.
