What? You do understand that the figures presented by each school are based on the SAME FORMULA, right? It's not like BSU is lining the pockets of their recruits any more than we are. It costs a lot more to GET to Boise than to SDSU; Duncan alone paid $2,000 out of pocket each time he went home to Australia. BSU can't recruit within a 2-3 hour drive of their campus; all their kids need to fly in, and typically through connections. The goal of this formula is to balance the costs of athletes so kids who attend BSU don't have to pay more out of pocket than those who attend SDSU. BSU has more out of state athletes.
SDSU isn't just offering the $2900; they've also changed their whole meal plan for athletes.
If SDSU were to raise their TCA amount to $5k, they'd have to report & explain the gap between what the financial aid office reports & what they're providing. This has NOTHING to do with the athletic department. If you don't like the $2900 number then go bitch to the Financial Aid office, since THEY determined how much we can or can't offer. NOT ATHLETICS! Specifically:
"The law specifies what items can comprise students' cost of attendance, and among them are tuition and fees; room and board; books, supplies, transportation and miscellaneous personal expenses. However, financial aid officers at each school must decide the appropriate and reasonable amounts to include for each type of cost."
SDSU is already behind the curve when it comes to support from donors, so I just laugh when people say "use donor money to fund it". If we had the necessary donors & donations we'd already be able to fund a lot more improvements across all our programs. BSU owns their own stadium, and is using the Albertsons naming fee to fund much of this. We don't have that option. We have to fund all $1MM via other methods, which includes creativity, donors AND ticket increases. SDSU has been trying to get the Aztec Club to grow larger & is having some success, but until our fans get "skin in the game" & actually donate & support athletics, we'll continue to be behind the BSU's, etc. financially.
The average amount across ALL universities is around $3400, which is near where SDSU falls. Every conference has major gaps between the higher & lowest amounts because all schools don't fall within the same MSA's.
Do NOT pin this on athletics.
Curious, are you a member of the Aztec Club ($100+ annually)? If not, maybe you should be looking in a mirror rather than blaming athletics.
LOL. I have $21.69 in my checking account and my credit cards are maxed. If the athletic department is depending on me, they're really screwed. Fortunately, I suspect not every Aztec alum was a fine arts major. Dude! Uber!

All fans, alumi etc. that want SDSU to be able to compete athletically have to contribute. There is no other choice. We should also make our voices heard when we feel the marketing of Aztec Athletics falls short. It costs nothing to insist that our programs are marketed to their utmost.

Sure it costs considerably more to fly to and from Boise than to SD. However, the price of housing is part of the equation and my guess is housing costs about twice as much in SD as Boise and students are paying it monthly rather than just a couple times per year as with airfare. But since the article in USA Today says these fees are set not by the campus president or AD but by some bureaucrat within the administration, if that bureaucrat has the same mindset as half of SDSU's faculty about the value of football, it would make sense that we're numero nuevo in a conference which is know to be penurious. (Where's that barf emoticon when you need it?)

As I said before, the "cost of attendance" formula should align more with the "cost of living" index used by the gov't.
If schools want to include something extra for annual travel for individual students then that is a different matter all together ... no way should every Boise St. athlete get a higher stipend because there are a few of them that are from Australia

In perspective, that would put us sixth-highest in the Big Ten. I don't think the correlation between stipend and powerhouses flooding pockets is that strong. As others said, the intent is to cover the cost, and perhaps we are doing a good job doing it.
