He got the biggest ovation from the crowd in quite a long time. He didn't mess up any words, and his key changes complemented the song (but that assumes you know anything about musical scales). The crowd was shouting its approval during the pauses and high points (rocket's red glare) of the rendition. It was great. Old farts, get off State's lawn! ps - you want something to bitch about, Shepard's softness on offense is easy pickings. You obviously grow up in a generation where you don't appreciate the tradition of the Anthem. But, then again, you probably didn't have to do anything to defend the right to the free speech you have. My 11 year old grandson thought it was horrible, so not just "old farts" that were unhappy. As far as" getting off State's lawn," I've supported more Aztec programs than you probably ever well. So get that crap out of here!

Even my11 year old grandson said the singing was horrible!! And, for those of you in the student section to whom this applies, when the Anthem is being sung, please STFU Show some respect. Really poor! Azteca, you can't expect the "no one likes us, we don't care crowd" to take this to heart, unfortunately . Of course I don't, it's just so much of todays mentality, unfortunately!

So get that crap out of here! THe two solo guys singing the NA in the last two games got , by far, the largest applause ...so I guess that leaves you in the minority along with your 11 year old grandson. Some people eat the same thing for breakfast every day...not saying it was better but certainly was different.

I do think it is generational, as an old school I prefer it to b sung traditional and last a minute and a half. I remember Marvin Gaye and Jose Feliciano being the first or so to do their own style back in the day. It's one thing if you have a great voice and control and another if you don't. Last year Larry Braggs sang it and was great as have others. I know that the people where I sit, generally older were kinda surprised and not all that enamored with it but, he got the words right and is done with. Just my $0.02's worth.

If you watched the singing of the Anthem just concluded at the Super Bowl, you would have seen it done the way it was meant to be sung. And the only time there was any cheering during the singing was when they showed our troops standing at attention in a battle zone. So I doubt I am in the minority! ,

The invasions of Greneda, Iraq, Vietnam, and Afghanistan had nothing to do with my free speech rights. Hussein and Ho Chi Minh were not threatening my constitutional rights. Please

It's official, WS is the worst shooting 5* ever. 5* ? Can that be true....just repeating what I've heard here. Sent from my SM-T900 using proboards I will go one further and state worse performing recruit for his HS rating in SDSU recruiting history. Close to the most bone head plays of any recent sdsu ball player. Very high turn over rate

They got the largest applause because we were so glad they were finally done.

So get that crap out of here! Do you even know the standard etiquette for the Anthem? Because I sure do. There's even a USC section about it; military members have additional requirements. There is nothing that forbids or even mentions applauding during the rendition. There is nothing about shooting fireworks during "rocket's red glare" either. There is no requirement that the song be completed in a set amount of time. That is you putting your own subjective requirements on it; nothing more, nothing less. The current etiquette is all about standing at attention and not milling around (a ton of people do this at Viejas), removing your hat and holding your hand over your heart (or saluting if military uniformed). A lot of people violate this etiquette. However, cheering during dramatic pauses in the singing is not one of them. Heck, I remember when people in the crowd used to sing the anthem; now I feel out of place because I still do while most people remain silent. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as is your grandson, about the quality of the singing. If you did have musical training, you might recognize it was much better than many of the other attempts to dramatically sing it. It was certainly nowhere close to Roseanne Barr's disrespectful treatment, nor did it violate any real etiquette.

As for fan noise etiquette... The best anthem ever sung, IMO. First Boston sporting event after the bombing::

Would anyone disagree that Roseann Barr's version was unacceptable in any situation as it was just disrespectful?

Would anyone disagree that Roseann Barr's version was unacceptable in any situation as it was just disrespectful? Having been "in da house" when that miserable excuse for a singing performance occurred (and my ears still occasionally bleed to this day...) I would opine that her version was unacceptable because it was screechy, off key, and an affront to all sound as a component of our environment. Most of the blame for that is on the shoulders of any and all persons in the Padre management who came to the inexplicable conclusion that she had any singing talent whatsoever and had any business performing any song in public, let alone our National Anthem. What was absolutely disrespectful, and has rightly earned her the hatred of all Padre fans, all patriotic Americans who love the Anthem, and anyone who happened to have the misfortune to be within earshot (or eyeshot...) of that incident, was the crotch-grab and spit immediately after the final note was excreted... that was even more offensive than the horrible performance, and that was 100% on Barr.
