Al Skalecky Jack Shawcroft Who made me an Aztec Basketball fan. Von Jacobson Dave Miller From my high school days, who made it to the Aztecs Zack Jones Nasty on defense, strong moves on offense. Michael Cage and Kawhi Leonard Took their games to the next level. Brandon Heath He cared. He worked. And then he scored. All around good guy. Tony Gwynn Assist master. All around good guy. Dwayne Polee Easy to see he loves the game and teammates. Best smile ever. Those are some great names from the past. I remember them well.

A few more old timers to add. Gary McCoy Mark Delsman & a kid out of Crawford? named Larry--forgot his last name plus Joe Lavender, who made it big in football.

Why would you choose Billy? With all due respect, it seems like he was purely on the Mesa for poonannie. I've never seen a 6'8" beast run quickly, like an antelope. He could be in the NBA right now, if he had any discipline. Seriously. Weren't we all? Yes, just saying; his athleticism, especially in the open court, was a sight to see. If he had half the work ethic of Kawhi, he'd be playing in the NBA. But I guess every player would be.

But I guess every player would be. He would be a superstar on this current team. He is the best finisher we have ever had. The guy rarely missed a shot within a few feet of the basket. He gets a lot of accusations that he "disappeared". I tend to think he played within the framework of the offense and if his shot was there, he took it and generally made it. I loved the guy as a player. My top 3 Zack Jones Randy Holcomb X

Tapley (attitude, team-play, shooting ability, salt of the basketball earth) 2. DJ Gay (game-winners, attitude, turnover ratio, importance in bringing us to new heights—34-3) 3. Kawhi (his career on the Mesa was sadly short, but his time here—and prominence in San Antonio—is an investment that pays infinite dividends in recruiting)

Randy Holcomb
I bought my season tickets when Fish was hired and within 3 years, Randy, Al, Tony, Deandre , Mike and the rest helped get Fish his 1st Aztec 20 win season, MWC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament team.

How about Milton "Milky" Phelps? Led the Aztecs to its only national championship in basketball. That was in addition to being the team leader three years in a row, with the Aztecs making the championship game each of those years. Okay, it was in 1939-1941, but so what? Do we leave Abe Lincoln off a list of the greatest Presidents because he lived 150 years ago? (Phelps was killed in WWII.)
(I wonder whether I am, other than Tom Ables, the only person who was ever in the old gym at State. That's the one that was the women's gym when I was a student ('62-'64).) That gym predated Peterson by quite a few years. I'm pretty sure it was torn down years ago.)

This is hard to answer....
1) Al "Big Shot" Faux - lights out when he shot from the three point line. He was an assassin.
2) Kawhi Leonard - hard to not mention Kawhi with his humble attitude and strong work ethic.
3) Randy Holcomb - just because he started it all (but could be any number of players who were my fav on the Mesa)
Honorable mentions: Any Aztec player who suited up, tied the laces and helped make the team what it is today

If it was than Phelps would have to be included along with Tony Pinkins. The subject is about favorite Aztec basketball player. Everyone's list is going to be limited by who has played since they started watching Aztec basketball. That pretty much leaves Phelps out of this discussion. Even for those of us who go back to the peach basket days will probably tend to list more recent players as all time favorites as memories of the earlier players fade. I also have been the old gym. I even saw a basketball game there. The court was short of regulation length, as I remember.

Kim Goetz. The best pure shooter I have seen 78-79. The "Long Ranger." If the current team had someone who could shoot like him, they'd score 75+ per night.

Randy Holcomb is a man, I have a ton of respect for him as a player and person. Faux and Leonard are also the bomb of course.

Randy Holcomb I bought my season tickets when Fish was hired and within 3 years, Randy, Al, Tony, Deandre , Mike and the rest helped get Fish his 1st Aztec 20 win season, MWC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament team. I forgot the game, and opponent, but I remember the situation. Down 1 with hardly any time on the clock and Deandre gets fouled. He had a swagger and confident smirk on his face that read, "I got this." I think it was a MWC tourny game. He sank both and SDSU won. That team was still one of my favorite teams on the Mesa along with the 2011-12 version of 4 guards and Shelton that weren't picked to do anything. That team helped the perception of SDSU as a program. The 2002 team got us to the dance, thus will always have a place in my heart. Anyone remember the details I forgot about Deandre's FTs?
