We don't have to play in Logan this season. At the beginning of the season that looked like a gimme that we would skip. Now it looks like a nice chance to skip a game that could be trouble. How in the world is Utah State this good? They return only 3 part time players and replaced everyone with 2 star players. Every player on their roster is a 2 star player. They are the anti-UNLV. Coaching matters.
In their 8 MWC games they have shot 46.8% on 3s, but it is defense that is their best asset.
MWC games Rankings #1 Fewest Opponent Free Throws #2 Opponent 3 point % #1 Opponent 2 point % #1 Blocked Shots #3 Opponent turnovers #2 Fewest Points Allowed
The game Saturday will be tough. They won at Boise State and took UNLV to OT in Vegas.

Stew Morrill is retiring after this season. USU can't be very happy about that.

Of course 'top coaches' are seldom any good at their jobs.

I'm certainly no basketball aficionado but I really didn't expect Utah State to look that good. Yes, I'm too am thinking the Aztecs best bring their A game. AND MAKE SOME FREAKING FREE THOW'S! Ill be watching this game at my sports pub for sure.

USU is not a good rebounding team so we should get a lot of 2nd chance shots underneath. Our bigs will need to muscle them in. Chol can, but this is when Spencer will have to get tough.
USU's offensive strength lies in their high number of assists by their guards, which is something that our guards know nothing about. If Quinn and Shepard have high TOs again, we're screwed. Hopefully Kell will be healthy for this game so that'll help.

USU is one of the worst rebounding teams in the country, they are 348th in offensive rebound % (there are 351 schools I believe), and 311th in defensive rebounding %. We aren't losing to Utah State at home.

Never rely on stars. More often than not they don't mean s**t, No, more often than not they are accurate. Agreed. Especially when you're talking 4-5 star kids. Between a 2 & 3 tend to more about where they are in terms of development and not necessarily their athletic ceiling. What's impressive about USU is that teams with "lesser" recruiting talent tend to need a couple years together before gelling, and he has them playing well together while still young & inexperienced.
That said, there's not a college coach alive who wouldn't want Kentucky, Duke or Kansas's roster.

They have four guys that score 9 points or more . Led by 6'8" Jalen Moore who average 15 points and 7 rebounds per game . Play 2 forwards and three guards . So we should attack them inside . We should have a mismatch at one of the forward positions - They have do have the Win at BSU , also beat Slow Pokes . but not any other real great wins. As mentioned they are a very good passing team . As with most teams not a real deep bench , so run on them and try to draw fouls going to the basket .

As others have alluded to, we SHOULD control the boards in this game so expect to see JJ & WS having good games underneath. The other aspect I like is they aren't proficient at getting to the line, AND when they do get there they are actually WORSE than us. This definitely should be a game where make more FT's than they attempt, and the gap may be big.
Also, in their 2 good road games (BSU & Vegas) they shot 40-50% from the 3PT line, which I don't seem them doing against us IF we come to play!

I should have been more clear. I did mean the 2 to 3 star players are often grossly underrated.

Rebounding:
Utah State is one of a number of teams that would rather drop back and insure no fast break points rather than go after offensive rebounds to any extent. The Aztecs will send 2 or 3 to the offensive boards, but Wyoming, AFA, and USU send maybe one or sometimes none. UNLV doesn't get a lot of offensive rebounds but doesn't really subscribe to the above strategy. They just stand around and watch their shots.
Utah State is in the bottom 3 of the MWC in defensive rebounding.
MWC games defensive rebounding % 78.1% SDSU 75.1% UNM 73.8% CSU 73.8% BSU 73.7% Wyoming 71.4% SJSU 70.3% AFA 68.6% Nevada 67.8% USU 65.2% FSU 64.2% UNLV
The Aztecs have never been a good defensive rebounding team. This team is different.
I am surprised Nevada is so low since they are the best offensive rebounding team in the MWC by a large margin.
