He could win the starting job he is a proven QB at the SEC level or he could share some time with JR. If Bawden is not in the top two he will likely redhirt. Then in 2016 you have a senior, two sophomores and a red shirt freshman.

Word around camp is that JR is not the answer so the coaches have been on the hunt to find a transfer that is ready to play. Hopefully JR will improve leaps and bounds and we will have a great battle this spring and lots of competitive depth.

He is doing just fine and the reason they went after another guy is that if he goes down we are screwed.

Article no new QB Smith indicate that he did not play in 2014, but no information on if he fully recovered from this shoulder surgery and was able to gain full strength and throwing accuracy. Any one have information on whether he was in the two deep rotation in 2014 at Kentucky , or if his shoulder is back to pre-surgery status? Hard to say if Smith is going to be on scholarship or if he plans to walkon, until there is official release by SDSU...walkonfan...

Okay, we're getting more depth at QB. The big question is, will anyone be ready? It's up to Coach Brian White to show what he knows. Since Sipe couldn't prepare anyone else to step in after QK went down.

Can we at least wait until spring ball , new QB and OC coaches to see , what it really looks like at QB , should be interesting . To see if we have a decent QB and system that is put in place to make sure they are successful .

Senior QB + Injury history = sounds too similar to what we had last season.
Concerning.

From what I hear he is a guy who can throw any kind of pass, has a rocket launcher for an arm. However, he is not the type (so far )that will complete 65% of his passes but is going to do better than 50% and will be hard to intercept. He tends to take off with the ball too soon. Then again he can run like a tailback. Imagine Ryan Lindley with Ryan Katz feet. If he can improve his accuracy he should be a dangerous weapon for the Aztecs. If nt they can let him run some read option.

Senior QB + Injury history = sounds too similar to what we had last season. Concerning. He's DISsimilar in one significant way: his strong arm. I.e., IF Smith can stay healthy and he therefore beats out JR for the starting gig, we will be considerably more dangerous through the air than when QK was healthy.

Or maybe it has nothing to do with JR and we just needed another QB that can play right away, if need be. Exactly, a little something called "depth." You can never have too much depth at QB. Just ask Ohio State. I think this is more about the fear of having JR backed-up by a true sophomore and a RS Freshman. Solid get. Never hurts to add senior experience, especially knowing he'll be here in the spring. There's no doubt he's coming here with the goal to start, knowing there is no incumbent QB & the leader in the clubhouse is injury prone. GREAT insurance.
The added bonus, as others have said, is if he can beat out Bawdin for the backup role it'll allow Bawdin to RS & develop further, giving him 2 full years as THE man down the road (in theory). He can back up JR in '16 & carry the torch (in theory) in '17 & '18. Win-win for all involved.
Don't think this kid is a superstar talent but do see him as the 'game manager', much in the spirit of QK. When that's your back-up you're in good shape.

I have a feeling that the incoming freshman Agnew will be a big surprise.

Some stats Maxwell has started 11 of the 21 games he has played in - his Kentucky team lost every conference game in 2013 2014 injured no stats 2013 105 of 183 1276 yards 9 TDs 1 INT- ( believe- split QB with another QB- he did play last 2 games in November of 2013 .) 2012 103 OF 150 975 yards 8 TD 4 INT'S 2011 84 of 153 4 TD 4 INT
does not normally rush the ball , believe pocket passer .
J.R - did get to red shirt with Aztec coaches in 2014 - practice and run scout team ,plus practice during Bowl game . 3 for 6 in 2013 1 TD 1 INT , plus 38 YARDS RUSHING was 2 for 2 passing against Nichols State , 1 for 4 vs Colorado .
So Spring , Summer and then Fall practices should be very important Chapman red shirted last year , can not this year. Will Bawden and Agnew start out as red shirts if they are not number #2?If they all stay , plus another walk on Anderson who red shirted last year .

I think the biggest mistake the staff made - mainly meaning Toledo and Sipe - regarding Bawden was ignoring the caliber of competition he played against in HS. I'm not very familiar with HS football west of San Jose but checking MaxPreps, Los Gatos finished 10-3 last season yet was still rated by MP as being only #70 in the state. I'm not saying Nick doesn't have talent as I think he has plenty of physical ability. However, to expect someone with his background to be the #2 guy as a true freshman behind a less than 100% healthy #1 was very naive.
