Went to Day 1 at Torrey Pines today, some random thoughts from all 6 games.
Corona Centennial and Cantwell Sacred Heart - Meh. CSH was just outmatched. Centennial presses full court all game and their speed was just too much. Worst game of the day. Sedrick Barefield was pretty solid, still a little bummed he went to SMU.
Redondo Union and Loyola - Defending champion Loyola loses their first round game to an uber talented Seahawks team. RU sophomore Billy Preston (pretty sure we're looking at him) was a non-factor for much of the game until the 4th quarter. Looked the part and will be a monster by his senior year. Athletic, long and quick. One of the better games of the day.
Lawndale and St. Patrick's (The Patrick School) - Touched on in the other thread, but just a mismatch in talent. Won't read too much into the subpar performance by Brodricks Jones. He'll be alright. Metu wasn't much of a factor either, only in spurts on offense and as a shot blocker/rim protector on the other end.
Torrey Pines and Thomas Jefferson - Fun game, fast pace, good shooting. John Olive gets a LOT out of his kids for the Falcons. Great coach, his teams always execute. Bummer they lost Brandon Cyrus to La Lumiere. Jefferson was just bigger, quicker and more athletic. Still was a very competitive game deep in the 4th.
Foothills Christian and Westchester - Foothills was just too strong.......but TJ Leaf went down in a heap with a 21 point lead with 2 minutes left to go in the game. Left the game with the help of his older brother and a trainer - Ankle injury is what it looked like and it looked pretty ugly. No weight on it and I'd be shocked if he played at all. Probably had a triple double and was the best player in the game by a tremendous margin. Bad break for the Knights who won in a rout.
Prime Prep and Windward - Another great game in the nightcap. PP is athletic everywhere, their warmup was a dunk show highlight reel. Terrence Ferguson (junior) is their superstar. One of the top juniors in the country, he'd be on my wish list. Can shoot the 3, can attack the rim, long, athletic and bouncy at 6'7"....a true beast on the offensive end. Had a tendency to camp around the perimeter a bit. Windward was a scrappy bunch, but just couldn't quite get over the hump.
Solid day of hoops and hopefully the Aztecs will land some of these kids.

Loyola and Windward at 2:15 should be a good one. The nightcap at 8:35 between Redondo and Prime Prep should be an AMAZING game. I think they are the two best teams there once TJ went down. Hope the kid is okay.

No coaches that I saw. It was tough to glean anything from that game. Lawndale's guards are terrible. They couldn't make a post entry pass on target whatsoever. The result was a tough catch 4-5 feet away from the block. The Celtics had 3 kids that were near/at 7', so stylistically, it was a bad matchup for Lawndale. Brodricks had a nice high post backdoor bounce pass on a dime early, but picked up his second foul on the offensive end and caused him to ride the bench. He needs to add lower body strength and refine his work in the post. I think he can be a good player, but an impact freshman, probably not.

Thank you . Believe Aztecs are recruiting M.Cage for 2016 , he prefers to play PF , do you see BJ able to play C in the Aztecs offense by 2016 ? As of now we will also have Zylan at PF / SF

We don't utilize a true center, but no, he's probably a 4. I don't know how much weight he can pack on his frame.

The reports I have read about Brodrick Jones have not been very pretty, talent and athletic, but seems like effort, motor, and energy isn't always there. Do not think he will start as an underclassmen.

Believe BJ has the talent to be a very good player but some have said it all depends on his motivation to perform well . For 2015 Aztecs have Spencor , Chol , Cheatham at PF / C , so it all depends on how much he wants to work to get the PT at PF .

Coaching up Buddah will help him grow; however, they need to introduce him to the weight room.
